このnoteの目的は、アメリカのニュース番組が理解出来るようになる方法を伝えることです。その方法とは、英語字幕を読みながら英語ニュースを毎日見続けること。 こんな感じです（サンプルのスクリーンショット）。
使う教材は、上のリンクの動画です。
アメリカの公共放送PBSのニュース番組で、質の高い報道に定評がありますが、残念なことに、字幕に誤りがかなり含まれていることがあります（今日もそうですが、週末版は特に多いです）。番組がアメリカで放送されてから約２時間で最終版の字幕がアップロードされますので（週末版は翌日のことが多いみたいです）、時間的制約を考えれば誤りは仕方がないことかもしれません。
しかし、英語学習者の場合、字幕に誤りがあると、変だと思っても、それが本当に間違いなのか分からないことがあると思います。あるいは、間違いに気付かないこともあるかもしれません。ですから、正確な字幕が必要です。
そこで、約１時間（週末版は30分）の番組ですが、英語音声をすべて聞いて、字幕の明らかな誤りを訂正したものをダウンロードできるようにしています（少し下にあります）。この字幕ファイルと動画をダウンロードして再生ソフトで使ってください（上のスクリーンショット動画のように再生できます）。
オリジナルの字幕は大文字表記のものを使ったので、今日の字幕ファイルはすべて大文字表記にしました。
比較用に、訂正前のオリジナルの字幕もアップロードしておきます。
動画サイトの週末版の字幕は、翌日以降に比較的正確なものに差し替えられるようです。
このnoteや字幕ファイルでは、辞書を調べても分からないような英語表現を説明しています（辞書を引けば分かる言葉は、自分で調べてください）。辞書に載ってないような表現、辞書にあっても意味がたくさんありすぎてどれなのか分からない言葉、文脈の中で特殊な使われ方をしている言葉、背景の知識がないと分からない部分、ニュース英語や時事英語の独特な表現、知っていると訳に立ちそうな表現などを説明しています（書き加えた説明は[* ……] ）。

[13:15] The school meal application process can be challenging [* = difficult, hard to do ] for families and for schools. And so some kids are under-certified [* = (この文脈では)無料の食事を受ける条件を満たしているのに(資格があるのに)、手続き上の理由などで、満たしていないことになっていること。その逆を表す言葉としてover-certifiedがあとの方に出てくる] , which means they're eligible for free meals, but there was maybe a mistake with their application or they did not submit an application.
[14:05] And then for schools, if a child shows up in the school cafeteria and they don't have money in their school lunch account or cash in hand, then the school is left with a tough decision too. They need to figure out whether or not they can cover the cost of that meal. And what ends up happening is if a child goes through the school lunch line and the school isn't going to let them charge [* to charge = つけ払いにする。つけで買う] the meal, then they end up having to take the lunch away from the child, which is pretty traumatic. And nobody wants that to happen.

[23:57] >> The initial name for this script before we went to production was called Falling Blocs, which is B-L-O-C-S. [* bloc = a group of countries acting together for political or economic goals, an alliance: e.g., the eastern bloc, the western bloc, a trading bloc, the Eurozone, the European Union, the Soviet Bloc. テトリス(Tetris)のゲームのブロック(block)と発音は同じ。] And I felt like that was the story behind the story.
