韻文訳の試み『歩く歌』（J.R.R.トールキン『旅の仲間』）
『指輪物語』を今あえて原書で読む楽しみの一つは、トールキンが作ったたくさんの歌を原文で味わえることだ。
昔訳書で読んだ時には、ストーリーとあまり関係がないので読み飛ばしていたが、なんとも恐れ多いことだ。
韻を踏み言葉を厳選し、注意深く編まれた数々の歌は、登場人物たちの心情を表し、世界観を補い、物語に深みを与えている。
ただいかんせん、訳詞は意味を伝えるが、音とリズムは伝えられない。意味は歌の持つさまざまな要素の一つにすぎない。
そこで不遜にも、本編に登場する歌を七五調のカプレットで訳してみた。
恐ろしいことに、七五調の訳詞ならAIが数秒で出力してくれるが、ありがたいことに、押韻はまだ人間の営みの領域にあるようだ。
以下はビルボがフロドに教えた walking-song（歩く歌）の全訳である。
Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
暖炉には 赤き火光り
屋根の下 寝間に安らぎ
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
でも行こう 足をのばせば
きっとある 角を曲がれば
A sudden tree or standing stone
