The Akobu-jō mask is used when performing the lead role in the Noh play Tenko (The Heavenly Drum). This play is based on an ancient Chinese legend that took place about 2,000 years ago during the Han dynasty. The story revolves around heavenly miracles, the parental love a father feels for his son, and the pain that love can cause when one loses someone dear.
