From February 7th to 9th, 2025, my companions and I traveled to Oga City in Akita Prefecture, and on February 8th we took part in the “Namahage Sedo Festival,” where tradition and passion converge. Beneath the cold skies, the festival—with its enchanting lights and awe-inspiring Namahage figures—offered a mystical experience that transcended time and stirred deep emotions within our hearts.
Background and History of the Festival
The Namahage Sedo Festival, renowned as a traditional event of Oga City, is celebrating its 62nd edition this year. It stands as a treasured cultural heritage that has taken root in the community over many years. Originally held as one part of the “Michinoku Five Great Snow Festivals,” it served as an important occasion during harsh winters when people supported one another and demonstrated regional solidarity. The inscription of Oga’s Namahage as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2018 further affirmed the global value of this tradition, garnering ever-increasing attention from both domestic and international audiences.
The festival is a brilliant fusion of the traditional Namahage events held across the Oga Peninsula on New Year’s Eve and the sacred Sedo Festival conducted at Shinzan Shrine. The climax arrives with the “Namahage Descent and Rice Cake Offering” segment. From the summit of Shinzan, shrouded in darkness, the Namahage—bearing lit torches—slowly make their descent. Accompanied by the powerful shout of “Uo!” and their steady, thumping steps, their descent evokes a scene straight out of mythology, leaving the entire venue breathless. Finally, the festival concludes with the “Village Namahage Invasion,” where Namahage figures from various regions gather for group photos and engaging exchanges with tourists, wrapping up the celebration in a warm display of shared traditional charm.

Moreover, with around 2,000 tourists present, natural exchanges blossomed among local residents, visitors from distant regions, and even participants from overseas. Smiling for commemorative photos and engaging in passionate discussions about behind-the-scenes stories and legends, everyone witnessed a living example of cultural exchange that transcends borders. The heartfelt expressions of the organizers and locals—emphasizing that each region’s uniquely expressive Namahage masks are a testament to how deeply embedded this tradition is—resonated with a sense of communal pride and hope for the future.
Traditional Attire “Keramino” and Regional Wisdom
