人という生物はやたらと旅が好きと言うが、今回の修学旅行と呼ばれる遠出で「なるほど。普段とは違う何かを感じる。」と納得したものだ。
They say that human creatures like to travel a lot, and this excursion, called a school trip, made him say, “I see. I feel something different from what I usually feel. I was convinced.
作家の卵としては間抜けなもので、漠然とした"異質なもの"だけを掴んで地元に戻った。
ここで記念の写真をあげるのと同時にその異質さを噛み砕いて記録しておこうと思う。
As an aspiring writer, I returned to my hometown with only a vague sense of “differentness” in my mind. I would like to record the “foreignness” of this experience in a few words, as well as present some commemorative photos.

まず、旅をするにあたって普段と異なることは何だろうか。
私は時間の流れに特に着目すべきだと思っている。
旅には大きく分けて2つの時間がある。
First, what is different about traveling? I think we should pay particular attention to the flow of time. There are two main types of time involved in travel.
1つ目として、【移動時間】である。旅にはどうしても到着までの時間がある。帰路に関しても同様だ。移動時間には鼓動が高鳴り、あとどのくらいで到着するか何度も時間を確かめるものである。
また、時間を確認するごとに自己の旅へのソワソワした気持ちを認識し、さらに期待が高まっていく。そういった次第である。
The first is [travel time]. Travelers inevitably have time to arrive at their destination. The same is true for the return trip. During the travel time, one's heart beats and one repeatedly checks the time to see how long it will take to reach the destination. Each time we check the time, we recognize our own eagerness for the trip, and our anticipation grows even higher. And so it goes.
この時間の使い方は人それぞれ違っている。
本を読む、音楽を聴く、備え付けテレビで映画やドラマを鑑賞する、睡眠をとる、共に旅をする仲間と語り合うなど。
しかし、この時間はどのような過ごし方をしても大抵時間の流れは普段とは変わらない。
どれだけ目的地に到着するまで、鼓動が鳴って胸が騒いだとしても、それはいつもの自分でしかない。
まだ旅は時間におけるスタートを切っていない。
The use of this time is different for everyone. Reading books, listening to music, watching movies or dramas on the TV, sleeping, talking with fellow travelers, etc. However, no matter how you spend this time, the flow of time is usually the same as usual. No matter how much your heart beats and your chest rumbles until you reach your destination, it is still just your usual self. The journey has not yet made its start in time.

私が重要視するのは、2つ目、【現地時間】である。
ここでいう現地時間とは、現地が何時であるかといった具合ではなく、《現地での過ごす時間の"流れ"》についての言葉と定義づけさせてもらう。
現地時間は加速したり、減速したり、ときには止まったりもする。止まるというのは、もちろん実際に時間の流れが止まるわけではなく、止まったように感じるほど短い時間が体感として長くなる、ということである。
先述した通り、私が重要視しているのはこの現地時間であり、そして私が旅を通して感じた異質なものとは、この現地時間によるものだった。
What I consider important is the second factor, “local time. Local time here is defined not as what time it is, but as the “flow” of time spent in the country. Local time accelerates, decelerates, and sometimes even stops. Stopping, of course, does not mean that the flow of time actually stops, but rather that the time that is so short that it feels like it has stopped becomes so long that it is actually felt as if it has stopped. As I mentioned earlier, it is this local time that is important to me, and it is this local time that is different from what I felt throughout my trip.
旅の目的地着いた瞬間、前触れもなく時間のスタートが切られる。
大抵の旅では、帰路につく日時が決まっているものだ。(ここでは放浪や無計画の旅場合などは除く。)
私の中では限りのない旅、つまり自宅に戻る予定が決まっていない旅というものはこういった現地時間を十分に味わうことができないと感じる。
The moment you arrive at the destination of your journey, without warning, time begins to run out. Most journeys have a fixed date and time for the return journey. (This excludes wandering and unplanned journeys.) In my opinion, a limitless journey, that is, a journey with no fixed return date and time, does not allow one to fully appreciate this kind of local time.
有限であることが美しさや楽しさだと一概に言えるわけではないと思うが、旅に関しては有限であることは貴重な要点となる。日常にまた戻るための英気を養うために人は旅をする。
I don't think it can be said in general that being finite is a thing of beauty or pleasure, but when it comes to travel, being finite is a valuable essential. People travel to nourish their energy to return to their daily lives.
話は戻るが、前触れもなく切られた時間のスタートは、旅の終了へと少しずつ迫っていく。
砂時計の上下を入れ替えたように、ただ1秒ずつ時間を刻んでいく。しゃらしゃらと同じ量の砂を落としていく。
To return to the story, the start of time, cut off without warning, is gradually approaching the end of the journey. As if the top and bottom of the hourglass had been switched, time ticks away, one second at a time. The same amount of sand is dropped down.

しかし、私たちは同じ量の砂を落としている感覚にはならない。砂が落ちるのが速い時もあれば遅い時もある。たまに詰まったりもするし、気づいたら上の砂は無くなっていたなんてこともある。
そういったところが普段過ごす時間の流れとは異質なものと感じる。
旅を共にする仲間と過ごす時間、交わす言葉の数々、旅先の空気を胸いっぱいに吸える回数、目に映せる光景、そのどれもが実は有限で2度は体験できない再現性のないものである。
But we do not get the sense that we are dropping the same amount of sand. Sometimes the sand falls faster, sometimes slower. Sometimes it gets stuck, and sometimes we notice that the sand on top is gone. This is something different from the flow of time that we usually spend. The time you spend with your fellow travelers, the words you exchange, the number of times you can breathe the air of the destination, and the sights you see are all finite and cannot be reproduced twice.
何年後かに同じ目的地へと旅に出て、同じ地点にたどり着いて、肺をいっぱいにして空気を吸っても何かが必ずちがうはずだ。旅へ一緒に出た人がたとえ数年前と同じ人であっても、紛れもなく何かが変わっている。目に映る光景は変わらないかもしれない。それでもきっと、あなたは変わったと感じる。
Even if we set out on a journey to the same destination years later, arrive at the same point, and breathe the air with our lungs full, something will surely be different. Even if the person you go on the journey with is the same person you were a few years ago, something has undeniably changed. The sight you see may be the same. But you will surely feel that you have changed.
人間は必ず老いていく。いつか身体は老いない素晴らしい技術が発見されても、心だけは正しく年輪を刻んでいく。
私たちは上手に今の心と向き合うことが必要である。
Humans will always age. Even if someday a wonderful technology is discovered that will not allow the body to age, only the mind will age properly. We need to be skillful in dealing with our minds today.
なんだか大袈裟なようで、社会的には当たり前と呼ばれることを学んだ。
It seems somewhat exaggerated, but I learned what is socially called the norm.
そういうふうに学生を大人にしていくのが修学旅行と呼ばれるものなのかもしれないなと感じた。
I felt that it might be what we call a school trip that makes students mature in that way.
