PBS NewsHour Aug. 14, 2023

Hundreds remain unaccounted for after Maui wildfires; the death toll from the Maui wildfires continues to climb as officials warn the number may rise further with just a fraction of the affected area searched so far, a string of floods and landslides in northern India killed at least 48 people and trapped many others and three waves of Russian drone and missile strikes rocked the Ukrainian port city of Odesa.

[07:50] A judge in Montana has ruled that young people have a constitutional right to a clean environment. The lawsuit was filed by 16 plaintiffs ranging in age from 5 to 22, who argued the state's lawmakers weren't doing enough to combat climate change. It's the first youth-led climate case to reach trial in the U.S. and sets a powerful precedent for similar cases to come.

[09:44] Can Trump's Republican rivals overcome his big lead before the Iowa caucuses?

Every food imaginable is available on a stick at the Iowa State Fair. But the state’s largest gathering also serves up a heaping helping of politics and a summer preview of what’s to come in 2024. Lisa Desjardins reports on the nation’s first race for the Republican presidential nomination.

[10:52] LISA DESJARDINS: Donald Trump has a commanding lead in polls and a killer instinct [** = An innate or intuitive inclination and ability to do whatever is necessary in order to succeed, no matter how ruthles (thefreedictionary)] , swooping into the fair and overshadowing his closest opponent, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

[11:38] Can anybody beat Donald Trump in this state?
JIMMY CENTERS, Iowa Political Strategist: It's going to be hard. The president currently has a significant lead, 24 points by the latest New York Times poll. But Iowans are willing to kick the tires [** to kick the tires = to inspect something to ensure it meets expected standards or has favored characteristics, typically before committing to purchasing or otherwise selecting it. (wiktionary)] .

[12:58] MICHAEL BAHRT, Iowa Voter: There are probably four or five other candidates in this race that they say good things, but I think that he has the better chance of winning of any of them.
LISA DESJARDINS: Chances helped by some of the strongest organization in Iowa, including the Never Back Down super PAC [** super PAC = 先日の番組に出てきました ] backing DeSantis.

[18:04] Tamara Keith and Amy Walter on DeSantis's campaign reset and Biden's messaging concerns

NPR’s Tamara Keith and Amy Walter of the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter join Geoff Bennett to discuss the latest political news, including Republican Presidential hopefuls duking it out in Iowa and President Biden on the road to sell his agenda.

[19:23] And the second is messaging. It was clear in all of those focus groups that she had been conducting over the last year, what Republican voters, especially those who are in the camp of either I'm never voting for Donald Trump or I like Donald Trump, but I'm open to other alternatives, maybe 50, 60 percent of the electorate, what they were saying is, they liked Ron DeSantis because he looked electable and he could win swing voters. DeSantis instead decided to focus his message on being the woke candidate -- or the anti-woke warrior [** woke = 以前の番組にも出てきました ] , going after cultural issues, using his time at the governor's office to go after a whole bunch of those issues, and it kind of moved him off of that talking point that was really hitting home [** to hit home = to resonate with someone; to be fully appreciated ] for those voters.

[21:14] The indictments have done nothing but consolidate support behind Trump among the Republican base. And all of these other people are out there biting at his heels [** to bite at someone's heels = to compete strongly with someone (in an attempt to replace them) ] trying to get some attention.

[22:13] But I think, for the folks who are outside of that group of voters, they too don't really -- they have already made their mind up about Donald Trump and whether these are serious charges or not serious charges. Does this move the needle [** to move the needle = to change a situation to a noticeable degree ] ?   Probably not. I think the only thing that moves the needle is when we get to a place where we actually have potentially a trial.

[34:15] J. MICHAEL LUTTIG: The issue with Hunter Biden and the issue with the former president, they are not similar in any way at all, let alone in gravity or consequence. It's the incumbent president's son and the personal conduct that he's being charged -- accused of is of a pedestrian nature [** pedestrian = ordinary; dull; commonplace; prosaic ] by comparison to what the former president has now been indicted for.
