SAMUEL GRAGG Chair, c. 1808 Bent ash and hickory construction with painted decoration
Predating Thonet's research into the bending of solid wood by some 40 years, Gragg received the first of several patents in 1808 for his revolution- ary bent wood chairs. Described by him as "elastic," these solid wood de- signs afforded more comfort than traditional seating.
