折戸ナスは21世紀に復活した伝説のナスなのです。

Orido nasu （eggplants grown in Orido area) is round and as big as a tennis ball, about six centimeters in diameter.
折戸ナス（折戸地区で育てられたナス）は丸く、テニスボールと同じくらい、直径が6センチほどです。

This eggplant’s texture is dense.
このナスの食感はギュッと凝縮された感じです。

The heating process enhances its flavor and releases sweetness.
加熱すると風味がよくなり、甘みが増します。

It is so delicious, but the harvest volume of one plant is much less than regular eggplants. It is about half.
とても美味しいのですが、一本の苗の収穫量が普通のナスよりずっと少ないのです。約半分です。

It presented a challenge to farmers in the Meiji period.
明治時代、その収穫量の少なさが農民にとっては難しい問題でした。

So in this period, it was decided that growing Orido nasu would be discontinued.
ですから当時、折戸ナスの栽培を続けようとはなりませんでした。

For many years, the locals thought this plant variety was already extinct.
長い年月、この品種はすでに絶滅したと地元の人々は思っていました。

However, the seeds were discovered in the national laboratory of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO).
しかし、その種が農研機構（国立研究開発法人 農業・食品産業技術総合研究機構）で発見されました。

Only 50 seeds were given to the Shizuoka prefectural government in 2005.
2005年、50粒だけ静岡県に譲られました。

And three farmer's households received the seeds and were finally able to revive the variety.
そして3件の農家がその種を受け取り、ついにその品種を復活させることに成功しました。

In 2007, they started selling them in markets in Shizuoka and around Tokyo.
2007年、静岡と首都圏の市場で売ることを始めました。

Interestingly, every June 1st, the early harvest is offered as a symbol of gratitude to
Kunozan Toshogu Shrine by its producers in the Orido area.
興味深いことに、毎年6月1日に折戸の生産者によって早く取れたナスが感謝のしるしとして久能山東照宮に奉納されます。

In this ceremony, the farmers prayed for another good harvest this year.
この儀式では、農家の皆さんは今年のさらなる豊作を祈ります。

Now, six farmer's households produce Orido nasu.
現在、6軒の農家が折戸ナスを生産しています。

This year, they started harvesting the crops on May 19.
今年は5月19日に収穫を始めました。

They estimate that their entire harvest will reach about 10 tons by December this year.
今年12月までに全体の収穫量としては10トンほどを見込んでいます。

This year's offering was already the 17th.
今年の奉納は17回目でした。

And they're hoping for much better sales and wider popularity for this product because Shizuoka has recently gathered attention due to the NHK history periodical drama.
生産者の皆さんは、NHK大河ドラマのため静岡に注目が集まっていることから、今年、折戸ナスの売り上げがもっと伸びること、そして折戸ナスの知名度が上がることを期待しています。
