葵舟に乗ると当然ながら石垣を良ーく見ることが出来ます。石垣には刻印があるものがあります。しっかり見えるよう船頭さんが舟を近づけてくれます。

Did you know there are engraved stones on Sumpu Castle's stone walls?

駿府城の石垣には刻印のある石があることを知っていましたか？

駿府城公園内で見られる刻印　北門橋近くにて

Some of them can be observed inside the Sumpu Castle Park and others can also be seen in the moat.

駿府城の中で見ることもできますが、お堀でも見ることが出来ます。

You can also exclusively observe some engraved stones from the boat by joining the tour.

この舟に乗るからこそ、刻印のある石を見ることが出来るのです。

Let me introduce why these engraved stones exist.

なぜこの刻印のある石があるのか、説明させてください。

この刻印のある石は駿府城から
江川町の交差点に移され展示されています。

After his retirement from the shogunate, Togugawa Ieyasu spent the last ten years of his life in Sumpu.

徳川家康は将軍を引退後、生涯最期の10年間を駿府で過ごしました。

At that time, he developed the Sumpu castle and the city.

当時、彼は駿府城と駿府のまちを開発しました。

The construction of Sumpu Castle was comparable to a modern public project.

駿府城の建設は現在の公共工事に例えられました。

Over sixty daimyo (feudal lords) from across Japan were obligated by the feudal government to contribute to this project.

60を超える日本中の大名がこのプロジェクトに貢献せよと幕府に命じられました。

The work started at the end of January in 1607 and finished at the end of October of that same year.

1607年の1月末にその建設は始められ、同年10月末に終了しました。

Each daimyo engraved their family symbols on the stones to be used in stone walls for three reasons.

それぞれの大名が石の上にその家を表すシンボルを彫りました。それには3つの理由がありました。

駿府城公園、二ノ丸御門跡広場となりの芝生公園に
この説明板があります。

First, it clearly showed which daimyo family was responsible for the construction of a certain part of the wall.

第一に、石垣の一定部分の建設にどの大名が責任を持つのか、明確に示しました。

Second, it prevented the stones from getting mixed up with other daimyo's ones.

第二に石が他の大名のものと混ざってしまうのを防ぎました。

Third, it proved the daimyo's contribution to the construction.

第三に、その大名が建設へ貢献したことを証明しました。

Some of the engraved stones in the Sumpu Castle Park are exclusively visible to passengers from the boat.

駿府城の中にある石垣の中にはお堀で舟に乗らないと見えない石垣もあるのです。

3つまとめて刻印をみられるので船頭さんが舟を近づけてくれます。
