今日から『The Final Problem (最後の事件) 』を読んでいきたいと思います。

この作品には、ロンドンの犯罪の頂点に立つ黒幕モリアーティ教授が登場し、シャーロック・ホームズの最後の物語という体で書かれています。

毎回こちらから一文ずつ取り上げていきますので、気長におつき合いください！

今日取り上げるのは…

It is with a heavy heart that I take up my pen to write these the last words in which I shall ever record the singular gifts by which my friend Mr. Sherlock Holmes was distinguished.

英文は、だれが→どうする→何をといった順番で並んでいます。
意味のかたまりで区切って、日本語を当ててから、解説にとんでみてください。

それでは、説明していきたいと思います。

It is with a heavy heart / that I take up my pen / to write / these the last words / in which I shall ever record / the singular gifts / by which my friend Mr. Sherlock Holmes was distinguished.
that 以下は重い心を伴う / 私がペンをとる(ことは) / 書くために / 最後の言葉を / その中で私が記録することになっている / 非凡な才能を / それによって私の友人シャーロック・ホームズ氏が識別された

前置詞＋関係代名詞は、関係詞節の後ろに置くこともできる前置詞が先頭に出てきています。

I take up my pen to write these the last words.
I shall ever record the singular gifts in these the last words.

二つの文を一つにまとめるとき、下の文の下線部をwhichに変えて、前置詞inと一緒に先頭に出すと原文のようになります。

一般的に these/those と冠詞は併用できないというルールがありますが、この作品が執筆された19世紀末には these the last words という表現があたりまえだったのか、単なる間違いなのかはわかりません。
