意味のかたまりで区切って、日本語を当ててから、解説にとんでみてください。

that event がどんな事件なのか？を説明するのが which has created a void in my life で、my life がどんな人生なのか？を説明するのが which the lapse of two years has done little to fill と情報がネストしています。

こういう文が出てくると、英文を英語の語順で読み進めていく醍醐味を感じられると思います。
