短編小説(813字)|お手々を突き出す女の子

　こんな夢を見た。

　クリスマスが間もなくやってくる頃のことである。異常に寒い仕事帰りの夜、私は１人で路地裏を歩いていた。

　今日のお客さんは、とても優しいおじさんだった。不馴れな私の仕事にも関わらず、お金をはずんでくれた。これでお父さんもお母さんもきっと喜んでくれるに違いない。それにしても、今夜は異常に寒い。私は家路へ急いでいた。

　そのときである。こんなに雪が舞っているのに、まるで夏のような服装をして、お手々を突き出している１人の少女が視界に入った。

「お嬢ちゃん、そんな格好していたら死んじゃうよ。これ上げるから、早くオウチに帰ったほうがいいよ」

　私は首に巻いていたマフラーを少女のお手々の上にのせた。

「お姉さん、どうもありがとう。でもね、あたし、マフラーなんかもらってもオウチに帰れないの」

　私は驚きながら少女に尋ねた。

「えっ？なんで？どうしてオウチに帰れないの？」

　少女はニッコリとしながらこう言った。

「う～んとね。お父さんはあたしが１万円以上もらって来ないと、帰ってきちゃダメだよって言ってたから」

　私はその言葉を聞いてピンときた。なぜこんなに寒い夜に、こんなに薄着の少女がこんなところで、お手々を突き出して立っているのかということが。。。
　きっと、この少女のオウチは、私とおんなじで、生活が厳しいのだろう。

「お嬢ちゃん。今日ね、お姉さん、お仕事して、優しいおじさんから10万円もらったの。全部、お嬢ちゃんにあげるからさ、早くオウチに帰りなさい。きっと、お嬢ちゃんのお父さんは、あなたをオウチに入れてくれるでしょう」

　私は今日もらったばかりの10万円を、少女のお手々の上に置いた。
　そのとき、私は遠くで、何か大きな音が鳴るのを聞いた。

　明くる日、爆心地を訪れた兵士はこう言った。

「かわいそうにね。関係のない二人が、砲撃の犠牲になるなんて。けれど、即死だったみたいだし、心なしか、二人ともニッコリ笑っているみたいだ…」

　I immediately understood those words. Why is a girl dressed so lightly, with her hands out, standing here on such a cold night... Surely, her home is just like mine, and they are living a tough life.

"Little girl. Today, I worked and received 100,000 yen from a kind old man. I'll give it all to you, so go home quickly. I'm sure your father will let you in."

　I placed the 100,000 yen I had just received on the girl's hands. At that moment, I heard a loud noise in the distance.

　The next day, the soldier who visited the epicenter said this.

"It's a shame. Two unrelated people became victims of the shelling. But it seems they died instantly, and oddly enough, they both seemed to be smiling..."
