問題

　以下の英文は、H.G.Wells, "The Island of Dr. Moreau"(Signet Classics) に掲載されているDr. John L. Flynn によるAfterword (後書き)の一節である。

　①から⑮までの( )に入る適切な単語を下の語群( aからo )から選び、文を完成させなさい。
　ただし、①から⑮に当てはまる単語は一度ずつしか使えません。

　The (①) mad scientist, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, represents scientific rationalism, which, more often than not, (②) wrong. No (③) how objective and well-intentional the great doctor (④) be, he still tends to produce a monster.

　Distraught (⑤) his brother's death (and thoughts of his own mortality), Frankenstein abandons his traditional Christian beliefs in (⑥) of a new religion known as science. 今年の問題傾向

　受験生がほとんどいないにも関わらず、穴埋め記号問題しかない。記述式問題が出題されなかったのは意外だった。

　単語の意味がわからなくても、文法的に処理できる箇所が多いようだ。満点が続出してもおかしくはない。ほとんどの問題は「品詞」がわかれば比較的容易に解答出来るだろう。

　ただし、⑦と⑬では若干悩んだ受験生がいたかもしれない。
　innocentには、形容詞のほかに「名詞」としての用法があるが、logical は基本的に「形容詞」としてのみ使われる。
