Look beyond the bloodshed and screams in many horror movies, and you may just discover incisive social commentary. The horror genre frequently serves as a vehicle to address issues ranging from politics to consumer culture.

A classic example is Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Released when anti-communist paranoia was at its height, the film is often said to be an allegory representing the spread of communism or the dangers of conformity. In the film, aliens disintegrate humans in their sleep and replace them with emotionless replicas, a metaphor for the insidious spread of a dangerous idea through a complacent society.

Similarly, George Romero's critically acclaimed masterpiece, Dawn of the Dead, is often said to be a metaphor for the ills of modern consumer society. Set in the days following a zombie apocalypse, it tells the story of human survivors sheltering in a shopping mall. The plot of the film revolves around how the survivors' and the zombies' mutual obsession with the mall and the consumer goods inside it leads to the survivors' demise.

These are just two of many examples of hidden messages concealed in films of the horror genre. The next time you are cowering on your sofa as the zombies close in, ask yourself if the director might be making a point about the society you yourself inhabit.
