Our first journeys discover to us 

the indiffernce of places. At home

I dream that at Naples, at Rome,

I can be intoxicated with beauty and

lose my sadness. I pack my trunk,

embrace my friends, embark on the 

sea and at last wake up in Naples, 

and there beside me is the stern 

fact, the sad self, unrelenting,

identical, that I fled from. I see the

Vatican and the palaces. I affect to

be intoxicated with sights and

suggestions, but I am not intoxicated.

My giant goes with me wherever 

I go.

旅することとは、愚か者の楽園のことで

ある。わたしたちがはじめて旅をして気

づくことは、様々な場所に無関心だとい

うことである。自国にいるときは、ナポ

リにいるときのことやローマにいるとき

のことを思うと美しさに酔いしれ、自分

の悲しみがないように振る舞うことがで　

きる。かばんに荷物を詰めて、友だちと

抱擁し、船に乗り込み、ついにはナポリ

で目覚めるが、わたしの身には、逃げ出

してきた容赦ない同一の悲しい私自身が

いて、付きまとうという現実がある。バ

チカンや宮殿が見える。景色や思い浮か

ぶことに酔っているふりをするものの、

酔ってはいない。どこへ行こうとわたし

という巨人は、わたしから離れない。
