A Short Story | "Good Morning"
I always stand at the same place. I am not quite sure when I first stood here. As far as I remember, I have stood here, at least, for more than five years.
Although I don't know exactly when and where I was born, I surely didn't have any consciousness when I was born. But I came to have consciousness some day either by accident or by enlightenment.
Like it or not, I seem to be destined to live a life as a vending machine. I am neither allowed to go anywhere nor to accost anyone and I have took it for granted that I am a vending machine ever since I found myself one of vending machines made by someone.
Once, there were snowy days. There were glaring hot summer days. There were times I was kicked in the chest when I was out of order.
I saw a lot of people, but I've invariably kept silent since the day when I first stood here.
But one day, I made up my mind to talk to a man. He would buy a canned coffee from me almost every day. He always seemed to be all alone.
Out of curiosity, I talked to him.
"Good morning. Hang in there."
He terribly looked surprized to hear my voice.
"What? Did this vending machine talk to me?"
I made no answer to his question, however, he seemed to feel happy to find himself not totally alone. And I also felt happiest at the sight of his reaction. My little effort was rewarded. I was glad that I mustered up the courage to say to him "Good morning."
Afterword
This story abovementioned is totally a figment of my imagination. But I sometimes wonder what if a vending machine had consciousness or awareness just as we have.
