Dwhale and Wholphin

Dwhale and Wholphin

In the ocean of spring,
far to the east,
there lived a dolphin
bigger than the others.

"You're too big to be a dolphin.
You're a whale, aren't you?"
"No, I'm not a whale."
"But you're not a dolphin either."

The dolphin, bigger than the others,
was named "Dwhale".

Dwhale was always alone,
feeling sorry for being different
and shrinking its big body.
But no matter how Dwhale tried,
it was still big.

はるか東の春の海
イルカのなかに
みんなより大きなイルカがいた。

「きみは大きいから
　イルカじゃなくてクジラだね」
「クジラじゃないよ」
「でも、イルカじゃない」

みんなより大きなイルカは
イジラと名前をつけられた。

イジラは、いつもひとりぼっち。
みんなより大きなからだを
もうしわけなさそうにすくめていた。
それでも、やっぱり大きかった。

In the ocean of autumn,
far to the west,
there lived a whale
smaller than the others.

"You're too small to be a whale.
You're a dolphin, aren't you?"
"No, I'm not a dolphin."
"But you're not a whale either."　

The whale, smaller than the others,
was named "Wholphin".

Wholphin was always alone,
feeling embarrassed for being different
and stretching its small body.
But no matter how Wholphin tried,
it was still small.

はるか西の秋の海
クジラのなかに
みんなより小さなクジラがいた。

「きみは小さいから
　クジラじゃなくてイルカだね」
「イルカじゃないよ」
「でも、クジラじゃない」

みんなより小さなクジラは
クルカと名前をつけられた。

クルカは、いつもひとりぼっち。
みんなより小さなからだを
いっしょうけんめいのばそうとした。
それでも、やっぱり小さかった。

Dwhale, isolated in the eastern ocean.
Wholphin, isolated in the western ocean.
Pushed away and rejected by the others,
alone in the middle of the ocean.　

Look, there is somebody out of nowhere.

Dwhale has found Wholphin.
Wholphin has found Dwhale.　

"Are you a dolphin?"
Dwhale asked Wholphin.
"I think I'm a whale.
But everyone calls me Wholphin,"
Wholphin said.

"Are you a whale?"
Wholphin asked Dwhale in turn.
"I think I'm a dolphin.
But everyone calls me Dwhale,"
Dwhale said.

"Nice to meeting Dwhale,
neither a dolphin nor a whale."
"Nice to meeting Wholphin,
neither a whale nor a dolphin."

Dwhale and Wholphin touched
the top of their noses to say hello.

のけものにされた東の海のイジラ。
のけものにされた西の海のクルカ。
みんなにつきはなされて、はじき出されて。
海のまんなかで、ひとりぼっち。

と思ったら、だれかいる。

イジラはクルカを見つけた。
クルカはイジラを見つけた。

「きみは、イルカなの？」
とイジラがクルカに聞いた。　

「ぼくは、自分のこと、
　クジラだと思っているけど、
　みんなからはクルカってよばれてる」
とクルカは言った。

「きみは、クジラなの？」
こんどはクルカがイジラに聞いた。

「ぼくは、自分のこと、
　イルカだと思っているけど、
　みんなからはイジラってよばれてる」
とイジラは言った。

「イルカでもクジラでもないイジラ、
　はじめまして」
「クジラでもイルカでもないクルカ、
　はじめまして」

イジラとクルカは
はなのさきっぽをチョンとあわせて、
あいさつをした。

"You are as big as I am,"
Dwhale said.
"You are as small as I am,"
Wholphin said.

"We are as big as we are,
and as small as we are,"
Dwhale and Wholphin
nodded to each other.

"So, we are whales as well as dolphins,"
Dwhale said.
"So, we are dolphins as well as whales,"
Wholphin said.

"We aren't 'either' a dolphin or a whale.
We are 'both',"
Dwhale and Wholphin laughed.

The ocean, once closed,
broadened wide and welcoming.

"♪We are dolphins and whales,
Dwhale and Wholphin."
"♪We are whales and dolphins,
Wholphin and Dwhale."
"♪Dwhale, Wholphin, Dwhale, Wholphin."

Dwhale and Wholphin
sang and swam on and on
through the endless, wide ocean.

「ぼくたち、おなじくらいの大きさだね」
とイジラが言った。
「ぼくたち、おなじくらいの小ささだね」
とクルカが言った。

「ぼくたち、同じくらい大きくて、
　同じくらい小さいね」
イジラとクルカはうなずきあった。

「じゃあ、ぼくらはイルカでクジラだ」
とイジラが言った。
「じゃあ、ぼくらはクジラでイルカだ」
とクルカが言った。

「どっちかじゃなくて、どっちもだ」
イジラとクルカはわらいあった。
きゅうくつだった海が、きゅうに広くなった。

「♪イルカでクジラ　イジラクルカ」
「♪クジラでイルカ　クルカイジラ」
「♪イジラ　クルカ　イジラ　クルカ」

イジラとクルカはうたいながら
広くなった海をどこまでもおよいでいった。

About "Dwhale and Wholphin"

Dwhale, a dolphin that's a bit bigger than the others, and Wholphin, a whale that's a bit smaller than the others. Rejected by their peers, the two, belonging to "neither here nor there", meet and recognize each other as both dolphin-like and whale-like, becoming friends.

Differentiation causes "division".
But finding differences interesting and learning from each other lead to "fulfillment".

Gender, skin color, language.
What one can do and cannot do.
Everyone is different, and that's okay.
That's wonderful.
Instead of dividing "company or othewise", embracing "both" creates a comforting warmth.

I believe that mutual recognition between individuals lead to the world where no one is excluded or harmed for being different.

May Dwhale and Wholphin swim through the ocean to reach you.

みんなよりちょっと大きなイルカのイジラと、みんなよりちょっと小さなクジラのクルカ。仲間からはじき出された「どっちつかず」のふたりが出会い、イルカのようなクジラのようなお互いを「どっちかじゃなくて、どっちもだ」と認め、仲良くなります。

違いを区別しようとすると、「分断」が生まれます。
違いを面白がり、学び合えると、「豊かさ」につながります。

性別。肌の色。言葉。
できることとできないこと。
一人一人違って、それで良い。それが良い。

「あっちとこっち」に分けるのではなく、「どっちも」と大きなふところに包めば、心地よい、あったかい。

ひとりとひとりが認め合うその延長線上に、自分と違う相手を排除したり傷つけたりすることのない世の中があると思います。

イジラとクルカの泳ぐ海が、あなたの海につながりますように。
