Short book review: Umehara Takeshi, "Japanese View of the Afterlife," Chuko Bunko. The first chapter is a transcription of a keynote speech given at an event held at the time of the founding of Nichibunken, and I think it is one of the author's greatest works. The need to compete with Levi-Strauss and Donald Keene, who gave simultaneous lectures, has resulted in a clear and concise summary of Umehara's writings, free of the verbosity and rushed thinking that is usually found in his writings. In order to write this short review, I carefully read the first chapter of the same title and the two chapters on "Resurrecting the Jomon." As a result, I have concluded that one of Umehara Takeshi's greatest achievements is his linking "Yanagita Kunio's theory on mountain people" with "Okamoto Taro's discovery of the beauty of the Jomon period," and his positioning of mountain people as Jomon people.
