追悼・エディト・マティス──リヒターと紡いだ峻厳なるバッハの世界

In Memory of Edith Mathis - The Severe World of Bach Woven with Richter
In memory of Edith Mathis, I would like to look back on one of the great recordings she participated in, Bach's Cantata No. 140 "Awaken, A Voice Calls". This work is one of the most popular pieces among Bach's cantatas, and has the typical chorale cantata form, featuring a joyful and majestic sound.
The chorale Zion Hears the Watchmen Sing, the fourth piece, is particularly impressive with its beautiful and flowing melody, and is also popular as a standalone organ chorale.
This performance of this masterpiece, conducted by Karl Richter and featuring the best soloists, Mathis (S), Schreier (T), and Fischer-Dieskau (Br), is truly legendary. Richter's interpretation of Bach, imbued with reverence and deep affection, continues to fascinate listeners with its unwavering formality.
There is no lapse in expression, and Richter's unique solemn sound resonates.
It is no exaggeration to say that Richter has never surpassed the pinnacle of Bach performances using modern instruments in Germany.
In contrast, Helmut Rilling brought an Italian-style elegance to his interpretation, bringing out a new side of Bach. However, the severe world of Bach that Richter built has never been shaken.
Richter's soulful Bach resonates with Matisse's pure singing voice. Now is the time to listen to this historic performance once again and remember her footsteps.
