September 11, 2024: French Novel, Count of Monte Cristo （フランス作品、モンテクリスト伯）

It was in the month of July that I finished reading the French novel Les Misérables. It impressed me so much that I have had strong interest in French novels. And as soon as I finished reading it, I began to read another French novel The Count of Monte Cristo. It has as long a story as Les Miserables, or it could be longer. I read it with Iwanami’s wide paperback, which consists of 7 volumes. I had finished 2 volumes and was reading the third. But suddenly, I have stopped reading it. I seemed to have got a bit tired of it. Like my first French novel, it described the story in detail. So, I should have got used to the style. But so far it has not fascinated me as much as Les Miserables. I know that I am only at the beginning part, and it is too early to expect anything interesting from the novel. I have to be reminded that it is a very long story with 7 volumes and about 3000 pages in total. So it should attract me in the later part, at least after a third.
But for now, I am not sure if I will be able to restart it again. It has been already a week since I stopped reading it. And I have been getting less interested in the book. Or I have been losing the power to restart it. And I now have the urge to read another book. It is one way to read another book for a change and to start the novel again when I want to. But if I do so, I have to waste my time I used to read it. In that case, I will read it again from the beginning. I will not be able to get satisfied unless I do so. It means that I have to read at least two and half volumes again. Or I have the other choice of giving it up. I now stand on the threshold of starting again or giving it up. I have to make quick decision. But what I have to do is to restart it immediately. It is the best way to enjoy the book. I have to understand that I am wasting my time making the decision. I should use the time to read the book. No decision is needed, just read the book!

　小説『レ・ミゼラブル』を読み終えたのは7月でした。この本が非常に印象的で、他のフランス作品も読みたくなりました。それで、読み終えるとすぐに、『モンテ・クリスト伯』を読み始めました。『レ・ミゼラブル』と同じくらい、いや、それ以上に長い物語です。全7巻からなる岩波のワイド文庫を読んでいます。今、2巻を読み終え、3巻を読んでいるところです。でも、ふと読むのをやめてしまいました。ちょっと飽きてしまったようです。『レ・ミゼラブル』と同じように、この小説もストーリーが細かく描写されており、このスタイルに慣れているはずでした。でも、今のところ『レ・ミゼラブル』ほどの魅力がありません。まだ序盤であり、面白いことを期待するのは早すぎることは分かっています。全7巻、約3000ページの非常に長い物語であることを忘れてはいけません。少なくとも3分の1くらい読めば、面白くなってくるはずです。
　でも、今のところ、再び読み進めるかどうかわかりません。読むのをやめてからすでに1週間が経ち、この本への興味が薄れてきています。もしくは、読み進めようという力を失いつつあります。そして今、別の本を読みたくなってきました。気分転換に別の本を読んで、またこの本を読むのも一法です。でも、そうすると、せっかく読んだ時間を無駄にすることになります。この本を再び最初から読むことになるからです。そうしないと気が済まないのです。少なくとも2巻半は読み直すことになります。あるいは、この本をあきらめるという手もあります。今、再開するか諦めるかの岐路にいます。
　早く決めないといけません。でも考えてみると、やるべきことは、すぐに読み続けることです。それがこの本を楽しむ最善の方法です。決断する時間がもったいないです。それより、本を読むために時間を使うべきです。決断はいりません！
