March 13, 2023: Used Books, Trouble (2) (中古本、トラブル (2))

It is a great disappointment for me to not receive the books I ordered on time. But I have had a much worse experience. It happened when I ordered a book in English from a used bookshop online. The shop promised that it would ship orders within twenty-four hours after receipt of them. So, I expected to receive some notice soon, but it did not come, and I had no choice but to wait for it from the shop. Then, I received an email from the shop a few days later. It said that the shop could not find the book I had ordered, so it would cancel the order and give me a refund. I was surprised by it and at a loss for words. I could not believe that there was a shop that sold out-of-stock books online these days. Probably, the shop must have the book in stock when the book was on sale online. And it had sold the book before I ordered it but had not removed it online. In other words, it had not counted the number of books in stock and had not updated the website. I can forgive it just this once. But it made the same mistake again. These experiences made me realize that some used bookshops are very unreliable. I had to be careful when choosing a shop.

　遅配以上に腹立たしいのが、アマゾン等のオンラインサイトで販売しておきがなら、いざ注文すると、在庫がない場合です。この悔しい体験をボクは2回味わいました。しかも、同じ業者です。この店は受注後24時間以内の発送を歌い文句にしていたので、発注後24時間以内に発送通知が来ると楽しみにしたのですが、時間内にはなんの通知もありませんでした。どうしたのかなと、不安になりながら、連絡を待ちました。そしたら、数日後に、在庫をしらべた結果、注文を受けた本は在庫がないことが判明したとのメールがきました。そして、注文をキャンセルし、返金するといっていたのです。返金は当たり前のことですが、この時代に在庫がない商品をオンラインで販売するなんであり得るのかと思いました。たぶん、掲載時には本は実在していて、販売してしまったにもか買わず、オンラインサイトの掲載を削除していなかったのではと想像しています。この経験から、信用の置けない業者がいることがわかりました。業者を選ぶ際は注意が必要です。
