Tanka in Japanese and Their English Versions: Apr. 2023
At Island Park of Noko (Fukuoka City)
A pair of gloves were
Dropped on the ground. They flew away,
Changing into birds
A person, pedalling
An invisible bicycle,
Translates in the air
Emoticons come out
Like small soap bubbles, each time
I breathe out through the nose
I drank a juice
With galaxies in it. The stars
Were grainy enough.
Pushing a handcart.
Various animals are
Walking on their hind legs
When a human stands
In front of the wall, it swells up
To mimic the face
When you bump into them,
More and more people sound
Like maracas
Sand moves upwards
Inside the hourglass, going
Through the orifice
Fallen leaves swarm,
Sticking to you. When you struggle,
More and more gather
As the germs which make
Humans droll are rampant, people
Are all droll around here*
* “Droll” is “hyoukin” in Japanese, and “a germ” in Japanese is “kin.” If there are any germs which make humans droll, I fancy that their name is “hyou-kin.”
The two ends of snail’s
Body turn into a face and
A tail alternately
The pitching machine
Pitches frogs at me, so
I have to dodge them
When it gets hot, things
Stick out their long tongues and huff
Like a panting dog
When the globe cracked open,
A mass of smoke came out and
Drifted away
With a bulge rising up
The stem from the base, sunflowers
Burp occasionally
Whenever I put up
My umbrella, starfish come,
Flying, to stick to it
Moving its fingers
Too nimbly, my palm, which has fled,
Eludes my chase
A “sky” turtle, which
Looks just like a turtle,
Crosses the sky, flapping
