三日月がコップの縁に腰掛けて足をぶらぶらさせ歌っていた
Sitting on the rim
Of a glass, a crescent was
Singing, swinging its legs
砂時計の中の小さな砂の滝に打たれて修行している行者
In an hourglass,
A small ascetic stands
Under the sandfall*
*In Japan, some ascetics practice, standing under a cascade.
落雷が近くであると目を覚まし数時間だけ活動する者
Only when a lightning
Hits nearby, they awake and are
Active for a few hours
青空のある一点を鳥たちが次々つつきついに開いた穴
Pecking one after
Another, the birds bore
A hole in the blue sky
ホットでもアイスでもない四十度くらいの紅茶 目玉おやじ入り
A cup of lukewarm tea,
Served with Eyeball Daddy
Bathing in it*
*“Eyeball Daddy” is the father of “GeGeGe-no-Kitaro,” the hero of Shigeru Mizuki’s Japanese ghost comic, which is worldwide famous. The thumb-sized daddy, whose head is an eyeball, routinely takes a bath in a rice bowl.
すらりとした足で駆けていくヴァイオリンを短い足で追いかけるチェロ
With short legs, a cello
Waddles after a violin
Which runs with slender legs
注文が泳ぐ料理店 お客から料理人へと注文が泳ぐ
In the restaurant,
Customers’ orders swim
To the cook like fish
おびただしいお面が壁を覆っていて時々それらが一斉に笑う
Sometimes all at once,
Countless masks which cover the wall
Burst into laughter
人間をすっぽり包める大きさの手のひらに後をつけられている
I am being followed
By a palm which is large enough
To envelop a man
かちかちと音を立てつつ案山子たちが左右に規則正しく揺れる
The scarecrows sway
From side to side, ticking
Metronomically
月に都市がいくつもできて月の欠けた部分にも都市の灯りが見える
On the missing part of
The moon, the lights of the cities
Built there are visible
