Long weekend

のんびりしたイメージのカナダですが、祝日数は10日間で、日本の祝日16日間（＋振替休日2日）に比べると少ないんです。月曜がビクトリアデーの祝日でした。ビクトリアデーとはビクトリア女王の誕生日を祝う日とされ、またこの日から夏の始まりとも言われています。カナダ人が24本のビールを“24”（twenty four)と言わずに“2−4”（two-four）とよく言うことから、この週末は"メイ 2-4 ウィークエンド" (May two-four weekend) と呼ばれているそうです。ビクトリアデーが24日の週にあるためビールを飲んでパーティーの時期！と言うのが浸透しているそうです。

You may think that Canada is a laid-back country but they have only 10 days of national holidays. Meanwhile, Japan has 16 days of national holidays (+2 observed holidays). We had a holiday for Victoria day on this Monday. Victoria day is a day to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday. It's not official but Canadians believe that the summer begins from this day. This long weekend is also called "May two-four weekend" because Canadians call a case of 24 beers a "two-four". Since the holiday falls on the week of May 24th it fits time for drinking beer (Party time!).

土曜日は天気がよかったので、２人で散歩しました。いつもの散歩ルートはオンタリオ湖の湖沿いを人工ビーチに向かうのですが、休日＋いい天気＝混雑を避けるため、湖沿いをビーチとは反対方向に行くことにしました。が、こちらのルートもたくさん人が散歩していたり、ランニングしていたり、サイクリングしていたりと混んでいました。

We went out for a walk since the weather was nice last Saturday. Our regular walking route is to walk along Lake Ontario toward a fake beach. We expected that it must be busy as it's the first day of a long weekend + great sunshine! So, we decided to walk in the opposite direction. This route was really busy too! People are walking, running, and riding bikes.

オンタリオ州はビジネスの営業制限や市民の行動制限が少しずつ緩和されてきていますが、今日現在も３月１７日から始まった緊急事態宣言の下にあります。トロントは自転車利用者が多く、数年前から都心部への自転車専用レーンの設置が増えています。上の写真で言うと、手前の道が自転車専用レーンで、自転車がたくさん信号待ちしている道路は本来は車道です。歩行者やサイクリストが２mの物理的距離をとりつつ野外アクティビティを楽しんでもらおうと週末は一部の車道数を減らしているそうです。それにしても本当にサイクリストがたくさんいてツールドフランスみたいでした。笑

While restrictions for business and citizens are slowly loosening, we have still been under the state of emergency since March 17th. There are many cyclists in Toronto and the city builds bike lanes more and more in recent years. In the photo, the front path is for cyclists, and behind that are the original roads where many cyclists are waiting for the green light. But now, the city of Toronto is expanding the road closures during weekends for pedestrians and cyclists to let them enjoy outside activities while keeping physical distancing. Even so, we saw many cyclists as if it were Tour de France. Haha.

日本人は公共の場でマスクをすることに慣れていますが、ここの人はマスクしません。コロナの影響でマスクをしている人を見ることが増えましたが、それでも5％から15％に増えたくらいでほとんどの人はマスクをしていません。5月20日に公式にマスクを着けることを奨める発表がされました。カナダ人がどう反応するかまだ謎ですが、お互いのためにできることをして行きたいですね。

Japanese are accustomed to wearing face masks in public but people here are not. Because of COVID-19, I can see people who wear face masks on the streets but the amount of people is around 5% to 15%. Most people still don't wear face masks. As of May 20th officials finally recommend wearing face masks. I don't know how Canadians would react to this announcement but I hope we are willing to act to help each other.
