「Engineeringだけが学びではない」留学中，ドイツで出会った教授の好きな言葉

ドイツ留学中の，東大理系院生のKenです．

本日はドイツで出会った教授の”感銘を受けた言葉”，”学びや教養の本質とは何かを私に問いかけてきてくれた言葉”を共有しようと思います．

私は現在留学先の大学院でSustainabilityに関して学ぶため，とあるクラスを受講しています．元々インフラ関連の研究をしていることもあって，マクロなSustainabilityの文脈で，都市工学的知見に基づくインフラマネジメントの手法を学びたかったためです．

今回，私が感銘を受けた言葉は次の一言から始まります．

「今回の授業を私は，期末のテストとして出すことはしない．
でもみんな必ず今日の授業を心に留めておいてくれ．．．」

元々その教授は，授業中に脱線することが多い方でした．しかし，脱線といっても科学的知見に対する自らの解釈を述べる脱線の仕方で，授業を受けるたびに垣間見える教養に毎度感心することが多かったです．

そんな感じで，その日も楽しく授業を受けていたのですが，最後に教授が紡いだ言葉は，私にとって“教養や学びの本質”とは何かを問いかけるものでした．
教授をというキャリアを歩んでいるからこそ，長い思索を積み重ねたからこそ生まれるその言葉に，私自身が考える学びや教養に関する言語化のヒントをもらえた気がするので今回はそれを共有しようと思います．

私なりにこの言葉にタイトルをつけるとすると，「理想の社会を定義するためのEngineering KnowledgeとLiberal arts Knowledge」でしょうか．

It's not only about your engineering knowledge that you should be aware of these things（今回の授業の内容：石油をめぐる経済情勢や歴史的背景）. It’s also important as a voter and as someone who observes global policies. Just take a look at these matters—don't be too black and white in your thinking. Be a little modest when making judgments.

First, try to understand what happened and what the motivations were. Then, be aware that we all likely share the wish for countries to deal with each other in a fair and open way. I hope this is something we all desire. However, looking at history, it hasn’t always happened that way, has it?

When we talk about new world orders or new technologies, if we ensure that these technologies are not inherently designed to seek access to certain geographies, that alone is already a big advantage. If there is no motivation to act maliciously, then chances are, one won’t. If something doesn't satisfy a specific desire or need, there’s no reason for it to turn into something harmful.

That’s why, when we look at new technologies, I believe our task is to ensure they are independent of dangerous sources. When discussing renewables, nuclear energy, or any other technology, we should aim for solutions that can be widely applied in a beneficial way—ones that encourage good exchanges but don’t create excessive dependencies. If we manage this successfully, we will take a step beyond what we saw in the 20th century.

And that, I believe, is a truly worthwhile and fair goal to pursue.

なんて教養に溢れた文章なのでしょうか．
工学的知見のみならず，社会的・歴史的な知見を持っている教授だからこそ，人類が学ぶ意味や理想的な社会を定義できるのだと思います．

元々私も『ミクロな工学的知見を持つものが，マクロの社会的な議論を行うべき』という課題意識が強くあり，それが実現できる研究室へ移動した背景があったので今回の言葉に個人的にかなり感銘を受けました．

このように，自分が持つ課題意識や興味を明確にすることを心掛けていると，他人の言葉に対して自分の思想世界を重ね合わせられるようになることが出来るようになってきたと感じます．
他人の言葉に解像度高く共感し，深い納得感を得るためにも，引き続き自分の学びや感動を言語化していこうと思いましたね．
