今日取り上げるのは…

He saw the question in my eyes, and, putting his finger-tips together and his elbows upon his knees, he explained the situation.

英文は、だれが→どうする→何をといった順番で並んでいます。
意味のかたまりで区切って、日本語を当ててから、解説にとんでみてください。

それでは、説明していきたいと思います。

He saw / the question / in my eyes, / and, putting his finger-tips together / and his elbows / upon his knees, / he explained / the situation.
彼は見た / 質問を / 私の目の中に / そして、指先を合わせながら / そして彼のひじを(置きながら) / 彼の膝の上に / 彼は説明した / 状況を

「目の中に質問を見た」は、相手が疑問を持っているのを察したことを表現しているのが理解できましたか？

putting は his finger-tips と his elbows の二つの目的語を持っています。
and の意味的な続きは he explained… で、putting… はどんな状態で状況を説明したのか？を表現する分詞構文です。
