Alike But Different…

“Single-minded” and “simple-minded” sound very similar but refer to totally different things. The former is laudable, while the latter, laughable; the former, impressive, while the latter, impassive; the former, mindful, the latter, mindless; the former, active, the latter, passive; the former, a gallant, the latter, a gag.

似て非なるもの

"Single-minded"（ひたむきな）と "simple-minded"（おバカな）は響きは似ているが全く違う。前者は賞賛に値するが後者は笑止千万、前者は印象的だが後者は無表情、前者は注意深いが後者は不注意、前者は能動的だが後者は受動的、前者は騎士だが後者はギャグである。

因みに「ひたむきな」は上昇志向であり、「したむきな」は下降思考である。
