　辞書学の主な役割は、次のような事柄をどう記述して並べるのかということである。

①どの言葉を掲載するのかを選ぶこと。
②言葉の定義。
③発音。

⑦活用(語形変化)。

　どれも大切なのだが、文章を読み書きするときに役立つのは、「言葉の定義」と「用例」だろう。意味がわからなければ読めないし、その言葉を使って書くことができない。また、意味がわかった上でその使い方(用例)がわかればなおありがたい。

　だが、言葉のもともと意味はどうだでたのか、どのように意味が変化してきたのかを知るには、定義の並べ方や語源の情報が大切。

　一般的な辞書では、最も頻繁に使われる言葉の意味をいちばん前に書いて、用例が少ないものほど後ろのほうに書くことが多い。現代人が「辞書をひく」場合には、そのほうが使い勝手がよい。

　けれども、「言葉を研究する」ならば、古い語義から新しい語義へという順番に書いたほうが、言葉の意味の変遷を知るには良いと言える。

　英語学の本を読んでいると、田中菊雄の「岩波英和辞典」という辞書のことが書いてある。
　私はお目にかかったことがないのだが、言葉の意味を古い時代から順番に記述しているらしい。読み物としては、こういう辞書のほうが面白いのではないか？、と思っている。
