21回目“Cousins” ソール・ベローのノベッラ (Part 2)。 親の兄弟姉妹に止まらず親のいとこの家族たち、彼彼女達の生き様が、彼ら自身が言葉を交わし批評し合い皮肉り合いする物語によって描かれます。ベローの評価基準に従い彼らを評価するのですが、読者は一緒になって考えることになります。
語り手は法律を学ぶも、模擬裁判もどきのTV番組を企画・司会者として名をはせシカゴ市の外交コンサルタント、今は合衆国政府の外交政策顧問等をしています。一方、自分のいとこたちは、マフィアとの繋がり故に数年の懲役刑を課される男、この男の姉で情熱一杯に生きる女性、学者への成り損ないの男など様々。人は何の為に生きる？ 見かけは派手でも、その為に生きるのではないと主張します。
＜英語を母語で話す人からはその人の肌触りが届きます＞
チョッとした言葉（英語）にもそれが母語の人が発したものであれば、そこにその人の肌触りが日本人の私にすら感じ取れるのです。この肌触りの不在、これこそが母語でない人から英語を学ぶことの苦痛（面白くない故の苦痛）です。そんな実例（参照先）に遭遇しました。次の通りです。
H (German): Hello there, I want to use the word "propaganda" jokingly to say that I want to make other people interested in something. Should I say "make propaganda" or "do propaganda"?
C (American English Speaker): Given that choice, I would pick "make."
H: Thanks a lot! So you "do advertising" and "make propaganda", right?
R (British English Speaker): Hi, H, To me, "propaganda" and "jokingly" don't sit well together in the same sentence. I might say something like "I'm interested in child welfare/ the Conservative Party/ global warming, and at the risk of boring you I'd like to spout/ parrot/ rattle on about the usual propaganda put out by the authorities. …"
G (USA English Speaker): Both "do" and "make" sound very odd to me in connection with "propaganda". You might say "create" or "spread" propaganda, depending on what you had in mind.
T (Polish): Would sow work used in a way similar to sow panic/ doubt? I need to sow (some) propaganda to have people buy it.?
C: (in response to G) Yes, those are the two more usual words that immediately came to my mind, as well..
C: (in response to T) No, I wouldn't sow in any propaganda if I were you.
C: (in response to H) I would say you do advertising, yes… but as G suggests, you probably shouldn't make propaganda. Try one of his variants.
H: OK! Thanks a million.
日本語が母語の私にも create propaganda とか spread propaganda と聞くと自然だなと頭に心地よく入り込みます。上記 British Speaker の R 氏の言葉には、相手に穏やかに届くように見事に配慮された文章かと感心もします。

Well, Motty made an earnest effort to be a good American. A good American makes propaganda for whatever existence has forced him to become.
９０才になろうとする、まじめに仕事に励んだ男、暖かいフロリダで余生を楽しむことを拒否した頑固な男の最後を描くのに、ベローは上記の描写を採用しています。国家を代表するようなレベルではない人間の描写ですが、この描写は石原某や森某やへと連想を誘うのです。
＜Bernard Malamud の貧乏節を思い出させる一節もあります。以下に抜粋。易しい文章なので和訳なし。＞
There were children and grandchildren, and they satisfied Riva, undoubtedly, but she was not one of your grannies. She had been a businesswoman. She and Motty had built a large business out of a shop with two delivery wagons. Sixty years ago Cousin Motty and his brother Shimon, together with my father, their first cousin, and a small workforce of Polish workers, had supplied a few hundred immigrant grocery stores with bread and kaiser rolls, and with cakes--fry cakes, layer cakes, coffee cakes, cream puffs, bismarcks, and eclairs. (… break …) Everybody was coated in flour except Cousin Riva, in office under the staircase, where she kept books and did the billing and the payroll. My father's title at the shop was Manager, as if the blasting ovens and the fragrance filling the whole block had anything to do with "Management". (… break …) They built a large business (not my father, who went out on his own and was never connected with any sizable success), and the business expanded until it reached the limits of its era, when it could not adapt itself to the conditions set by supermarkets--refrigerated long-distance shipping, uniformity of product, volume (demands for millions of dozens of kaiser rolls). So the business was liquidated. Nobody was to blame for that.
マラマッドの "The Assistant" ではその舞台となった個人経営のグローサリー・ストア、近所に綺麗なデリカテッセンの店が開店すると客が取られてしまうのですが、そんな店にパンを卸していたのかなと思い出すのです。ポーランドからの移民ワーカー達はマラマッドの "The First Seven Years" にある靴屋に住み込んだ靴職人を思い出させます。
＜学者になり損ねたいとこが語り手に送り付けた学説（？）を原書 Page 234 から抜粋します。和訳付き＞
The great landmasses were held by passive, receptive nations. （全世界を念頭に言うと）陸地の広大な部分に受け身的な行動様式を維持する人々でなる幾つもの国が分布しているのです。 Smaller states were the aggressive impregnating forces. 相対的に小さい領土しか持たないような幾つもの国家が軍事力に頼り、意気盛んで拡張政策を採る国家であったのです。 No résumé would help; I’d have to read the full text, he wrote. 私にとって要約文は役に立たないので、レポートの原文を読むほかありません、というのが彼（ショーレム）の言葉でした。 But Right and Left, he wished to tell me now, were epiphenomena. 彼は、私に対して、しかし右か左かという基準は（世間で言われていたのとは異なって）枝葉末節のものにすぎなかったのだと、手紙で伝えたかったのでした。 （そしてそれに続けて） The main current would turn finally into a broad, centrist, free evolutionary continuum which was just beginning to reveal its promise in the Western democracies. 世界の主流をなす流れは最終的には広い幅をなしている、中庸的な政治主張に属する、自由な発展経路に向けて舵を切ることでしょう。この発展経路にあっては西洋において発生した民主主義こそが、この発展経路の担い手としての可能性をもつもの（promise）であることが、今漸く明らかに成りつつあります。（以上、添付の Study Notes よりの抜粋です。）
