３　丸谷才一 （1925～2012）

　英文学者,小説家。1925年（大正14）8月27日山形県鶴岡市生まれ。東大卒。J.ジョイス「ユリシーズ」の翻訳で注目される。日本的な私小説の伝統を批判して小説を手がけ,昭和43年『年の残り』で芥川賞,47年『たった一人の反乱』で谷崎潤一郎賞。古典にも造詣がふかく,昭和49年『後鳥羽院』で読売文学賞。文章論やエッセイなども多い。2011年文化勲章受章。2012年10月13日87歳で死去。本名は根村才一。

3 　Saiichi Maruya (1925～2012)

　　　A scholar of English literature and a novelist. Born in Tsuruoka city, in Yamagata prefecture on August 27, 1925. He graduated from Tokyo University. He is noted in the translation of J. Joyce's "Ulysses". He criticized the Japanese tradition of private novels and wrote novels. He received the Akutagawa Prize for "the Rest of the Year" in 1968 and the Junichiro Tanizaki Prize for "The Only Rebellion" in 1972. He has a good knowledge of classics and won the Yomiuri Literature Prize for "Gotoba-in" in 1974. He also has a lot of writing theories and essays. He received the Order of Culture in 2011. He died on October 13, 2012, at the age of 87. His real name is Saiichi Nemura.
