これはまた「グーグル」の翻訳開発チームへの挑戦でもある。現在の翻訳ソフトは、新聞記事やエッセイや論文などの翻訳精度は高いが、文学的表現はまだまだ稚拙の領域である。文学的表現の精度を上げるには、すぐれた翻訳家たちの翻訳本を広く採集して、その魔術的な技をそのシステムの中に組み込んでいくべきだろう。

　年が明けた三学期の最初の日、五年三組の教壇に新しい先生が立った。その先生はにこにこしながら、私たちを見回すと、
「なるほど、これが名高き五年三組なんだなあ。さあて、ぼくの自己紹介からはじめようか……」
　と言ってチョークをとり、黒板に吉と書き、永と書きかけたとき、だれかがトマトを黒板に投げつけた。トマトはびしゃっと音をたてて炸裂した。

  私たちもびっくりしたが、先生は、「ウム………」と絶句して、砕け散ったトマトを見下ろしていたが、
「君たちの歓迎のメッセージっていうわけかな。面白いメッセージだなあ。だけどまず、ぼくの名前をちゃんと書かせてくれよ」
　と言ってまた黒板に永という字を書き終え、和と書き、雄という字を半分書きかけたとき、またトマトが投げつけられた。今度のトマトは派手に飛び散り、その滴が前の席の女の子たちにまで飛んできて、女の子たちがきあゃっと悲鳴をあげた。

「なるほどなあ。こういう自己表現の仕方というものがあるんだね。なかなか痛快だなあ。このトマトを投げたのはだれなんだい。こっちのトマトは、多分そのあたりからカーブ回転で飛んできたんだろうね。こっちのトマトは、こちら側からシュート回転で投げられたんだろうか。さあ、いさぎよくだれが投げたか手を挙げてくれよ」
　しかしだれもが黙りこんでいる。すると先生はさらにこう言った。

「みんな、誤解しないでくれよ。手を挙げてくれと言っているのは、このトマトを投げた子を叱るなんてことじゃないよ。ぼくはその子を尊敬する。だって先生っていうのは言ってみればクラスの権力者だよね。クラスの隊長であり、君たちの点数をつける怖い司令官みたいなものだ。その権力者にトマトを投げつけるなんて、まさに英雄だ。ぼくはその英雄にしたしく挨拶をしたいんだよ。よくやってくれたなあってね」

On the first day of the third semester of the new year, a new teacher stood at the podium of class 3 of the 5th grade. The teacher smiled and looked around us,
