セッション定番曲その158：Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry
ファンク／歌ものセッションの定番曲。延々とワンリフで展開するノリ重視の曲です。楽しく踊りましょう。

和訳したものはあちこちのWebサイトに掲載されているので、ここではポイントだけ説明します。
ポイント1：Wild Cherry
1976年の大ヒット曲、ダンスナンバー。
Wild Cherryは米国オハイオ州出身のロックバンド、いわゆる一発屋です。
音だけ聴くといわゆる「黒人っぽい」音ですが、メンバーは全員「白人」です。タイトルが「Play That Funky Music (White Boy)」となっていることからもそれを敢えて強調したい気持ちがあったのかと思います。
1976年当時、やはり「白人バンド」と「黒人バンド」の音楽には違いがあって、ノリの感じが違って前者はストレートな8ビートが中心、後者は横揺れのファンクビートが中心。だか「白人にはファンキーな音楽なんて出来ない」と思われていました。実際には「ホワイトソウル」と呼ばれる白人シンガーやバンドも多かったんですが。
この曲もギターソロだけやたらとハードロックっぽかったり、ベースが乗りきれていなかったり、ロックバンドの片鱗はあります。
ポイント2：ディスコ
今では想像も付きませんが、1970年代半ば移行の米国ヒットチャートは「ディスコミュージック」が席巻していました。実際に「ディスコ」で掛かっていたのは割と幅広い音楽でしたが、次第に「4つ打ち」の似たようなテンポのものが増えていって、そういうアレンジの曲でないとヒットしないように。営々と築いてきたソウル音楽の精神性や粘り腰のノリなど欠片もない音楽。最初はソウル系やジャズファンク系の黒人ミュージシャンが中心でしたが、徐々に大物の白人ロックバンドもそういうアレンジの曲を出すようになって、ロックファンはみんな「クソが！」という気持ちで聴いていました。

豪華なメンバーの無駄使い。ドラムはCarmine Appiceで、曲作りにも関わっています。

「お前もか！？」という感じでした。Charlie Wattsの叩く4つ打ちはなんかぎこちなくて、独特の味になっています。
Kiss「I Was Made For Lovin' You」1979年録音
「こいつらならやりかねないな」という感じでした。
以下はちょっと傾向が違いますが、同様に白人グループによる踊れるナンバー。

ポイント3：歌詞のポイント

でもある晩、なんかパッとしない気分になって
ディスコをチェックしに行ってみたんだ

「おい、ホワイトボーイ！
こういうファンキーなやつをお前もやれよ

と、「ロックの時代は終わりだ、これからはファンキーなディスコ音楽だ」というメッセージが続きます。「最初は切り替えるのが難しかったけど、段々分かってきたかも」と。
敢えて自虐的に「白人野郎なんかにファンキーな音楽なんて出来っこない」という偏見を歌いながら、実際には最高にファンキーな曲を歌っているという構造ですね。
*「ブギー（ブギウギ）」は基本的には速いシャッフルで、ロックンロール（ストレートな8ビート）でもないというか、なんでこういう表現をしたのかなと思います。誰か教えてください。
