そう言うと、プーはまた足跡を追って行きはじめたんだ。ピグレットは、ちょっとプーの後ろ姿を見ていたんだけど、走ってついて行きました。ウィニー・ザ・プーは、急にピタッと立ち止まると、ふしぎだなぁって様子で、足跡の方にかがみこんでいます。
「どうしたの？」
「とってもおかしいんだけど、動物は2匹になったみたい。こいつの…なにかはわからないけど…ところに、もう1匹…なにかわからないけど…やって来てね、今はその2匹で一緒に進んでいるんだよ。ピグレット、もし良かったら、ついて来てくれない？モウジュウだったらいけないから。」
ピグレットは、少し格好つけた様子で耳をかくと、金曜日まではやることがないから、喜んでついて行くよ、それが本当にズルイタチだったらいけないから、って言ったんだ。
「つまり、2匹のズルイタチだったら…ってことだよね？」とプーは聞いたんだけど、ピグレットは、ともかく金曜日まではやることがないからって答えて、こうしてふたりは進んでいきました。
With these few words he went on tracking, and Piglet, after watching him for a minute or two, ran after him. Winnie-the-Pooh had come to a sudden stop, and was bending over the tracks in a puzzled sort of way.
‘What's the matter?’ asked Piglet.
‘It's a very funny thing,’ said Bear, ‘but there seem to be two animals now. This—whatever-it-was—has been joined by another—whatever-it-is—and the two of them are now proceeding in company. Would you mind coming with me, Piglet, in case they turn out to be Hostile Animals?’
Piglet scratched his ear in a nice sort of way, and said that he had nothing to do until Friday, and would be delighted to come, in case it really was a Woozle.
‘You mean, in case it really is two Woozles,’ said Winnie-the-Pooh, and Piglet said that anyhow he had nothing to do until Friday. So off they went together.
With these few words
この直前のプーのセリフ ‘Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't. You never can tell with paw-marks.’を指している。
he went on tracking
go on ~ingの形で「同じことを（中断なく）継続する (= continue ~ing)」という意味を表す。この場面では、厳密に言えばピグレットに何をしているのか説明する場面が挟まっているが、プーの意識としては冒頭から「足跡の追跡」という行為が一貫して続いているものと考えられる。
他方、go on to doは「1つの行為から別の行為に移行する」ことを表す。

(ii) She stopped talking about that and went on to describe her other problems.
