ソシンロウバイ 花弁全てが半透明な黄色の品種
素心蝋梅 （ソシンロウバイ）
クスノキ目、ロウバイ科、ロウバイ属
一般のロウバイは、花弁の奥の部分は赤いものが
よく見られるが、その部位までもが飴細工の様に
半透明な黄色花弁のものを指して『素心蝋梅』の
名がついている。素心は野山にあるものが色素を
失ったものを指した言葉だが、こちらのものでは
品種名に使われている。
一般のロウバイよりも甘い香りが強い事から庭木
としても人気の高い品種となる。
花からとても甘い香りがするからと安全な訳では
なく、この実の中の種にはアルカロイド系の毒が
含まれているので注意が必要となる。種迄は消化
しない鳥は大丈夫なのだろうが、これの実がその
ままに残ってる姿も多い事から実自体は鳥からは
人気がない事が想像できる。
だが、鵯（ヒヨドリ）などはこの花を丸ごと食べて
しまうのである。植物園により、ソシンロウバイの
枝にＣＤなどピカピカのディスクを吊り下げている
の理由はこの為である。
この北山緑化植物園では、その措置をしておらずに
多くの花は拐われていった様であり、花自体の数は
とても少なかったのである。

Unlike common Roubai (Chimonanthus praecox), which often has reddish coloring in the inner part of its petals, Soshin Roubai refers to a variety where even this inner section is a translucent, candy-like yellow. The name “Soshin” originally referred to naturally occurring plants that have lost their pigmentation, but in this case, it is used as a cultivar name.
Due to its stronger and sweeter fragrance compared to regular Roubai, Soshin Roubai is a highly popular choice as a garden tree.
However, the fact that the flowers emit a sweet fragrance does not mean they are entirely safe. The seeds inside the fruit contain alkaloid toxins, requiring caution. Birds that do not digest seeds may be unaffected, but the frequent sight of uneaten fruit suggests that they are not particularly favored by birds.
That being said, Brown-eared Bulbuls (Hypsipetes amaurotis) are known to eat the flowers whole. This is why some botanical gardens hang shiny objects like CDs from Soshin Roubai branches—to deter these birds.
At the Kitayama Greenery Botanical Garden, however, no such measures were taken, leading to a significant number of flowers being taken by birds. As a result, very few flowers remained.
