Long Holidays （長期休暇）

Japan has seen a certain number of workers quit their jobs after a long holiday. During the holidays, they seem to look back on their working lives and decide to quit. They must have remembered their hard work and lost the energy to continue working. I know what they have in their minds, to some extent. I have had the same thing in my early 20s. I was also tempted to quit. But I did not do so at that time, though I did not know why. Probably, I was too busy to continue to think about quitting.
It is true that a long holiday, such as a week-long one, tends to make some Japanese workers look back on their working lives and try to find what to do next. In other words, they spend the holiday on it. In that case, the so-called long holiday may not be enough, and they might need a longer holiday. I do not mean to prevent them from qutting. But I have thought so when I was in Europe. I had a week-long holiday in summer and winter. It was a very long holiday for me, as I had hardly had such a holiday in Japan. And it amused me a lot. But I could not forget about my work for the first 3 or 4 days. It was only the last 2 or 3 days that I was able to devote all my time to and enjoy it fully. So, I often used to think that a week-long holiday was not good enough, and I needed more holidays to refresh myself fully.

　日本では、長期休暇明けに仕事を辞める人が一部います。連休中、自分の社会人生活を振り返り、仕事を辞める決意をするようでう。仕事の苦労を思い出し、続ける気力を失ったのでしょう。 ある程度、この人たちの気持ちがわかります。ボクも、20代前半に同じようなことがありました。辞めたいと思ったこともあります。でも、その時、理由はわかりませんが、辞めませんでした。おそらく、仕事が忙しすぎて辞めたいと思い続けられなかったのだと思います。
　たしかに、1週間ほどの長期休暇があると、自分の社会人生活を振り返り、次に何をすべきかを考える人がいます。こうした人たちは、休暇をこれに費やします。その場合、１週間程度の休暇では物足りず、もっと長い休暇が必要なのかもしれません。ボクは、こうした人たちの退職を妨げるつもりはありません。でも、欧州にいたときにそう思ったことがあります。夏と冬に1週間の休暇がありました。日本ではそんな長期の休暇はほとんどなかったので、ボクにとってはとても長い休暇でした。そして、休暇はとても楽しかったです。でも、最初の3、4日は仕事のことを忘れることができませんでした。休暇に没頭し、楽しめるのは最後の数日だけです。なので、１週間の休暇では物足りず、リフレッシュするにはもっと休暇が必要だと思ったものです。
