June 26, 2024：Scandals （スキャンダル）

Scandals. We can see them on every corner, and they will never cease to exist. I, myself, have not been in a position that would cause a sensation. And I do not have a strong enough mind to do something that would disturb the public. Sometimes, I wish that I were as bold and fearless as the former MLB translator Ippei Mizuhara. As opposed to him, I am a coward and hate gambling. But I have played roulette a couple of times in Dutch and Danish casinos. I was forced to go there to entertain my colleagues who came from Japan on business. I lost it in the Netherlands, but I was lucky to win it in Denmark and got some redemption. I was tempted to bet it again, but I was afraid of losing so that I stopped playing. The redemption was so small that I used it to buy a toy for my daughter.
So, I will be, and hope to be, immune from being involved in a scandal. But if I were to become famous enough to stir up the public with a scandal, I would like to be a gentleman burglar like Arsène Lupin in France. I do not like being in the public eye. But I am ready to be a little of service to society, although I know that I cannot do much. So, I would like to try as many things on my own as I can, to the extent I can. And I am a little excited just thinking about me doing something useful at night when everyone else is in bed.

　スキャンダル。スキャンダルはいたるところで目にするし、これからも絶えることはありません。ボクは、スキャンダル起こすような状況にはありません。また、世間を騒がせるようなことをするほど強い心も持ち合わせていません。時々、元MLB通訳の水原さんのように大胆不敵でありたいと思うこともあります。彼とは対照的に、ボクは臆病者でギャンブルが大嫌いです。でも、オランダとデンマークのカジノで何度かルーレットをしたことがあります。日本から仕事で来た同僚をもてなすために仕方なく行きました。オランダでは負けましたが、デンマークでは運良く、勝って、少し儲けました。その時は、また賭けたくなりましたが、負けるのが怖くてやめました。でも、払戻金はとても少なく、娘におもちゃを買ってやれる程度でした。
　なので、ボクがスキャンダルに巻き込まれることはないだろうし、そうありたいと願っています。でも、もしスキャンダルで世間を騒がすほど有名になるとしたら、フランスのアルセーヌ・ルパンのような紳士的な泥棒になりたいです。人目にさらされるのは好きではありません。でも、大したことはできないですが、少しは社会の役に立ちたいとも思っています。だから、自分のできる範囲で、できるだけいろいろなことを自分でやってみたいです。みんなが寝静まった夜に何か役に立つことをしていると考えるだけで、ちょっとワクワクします。
