Hip Replacement （人工股関節）
The other day, I got the news that a talent, Kazushige Nagashima, had his right hip replaced. The surgery went well, and he began to walk the day after. And he left the hospital soon after. Since then, he has been on a lot of TV shows and worked as usual. It seemed that the surgery went well and satisfied him.
But his story was different from my experience. I also had the same surgery 30 years ago. As he did, I had expected to leave the hospital soon after the surgery. My surgeon also suggested that I would be able to leave the hospital soon. But I could not do so after the surgery. I was not allowed to get out of the bed and had to stay in the bed for a week. I also had to relieve myself in the bed. It was frustrating, and these days were very long to spend. I was told by my surgeon that the bones around my hip were more fragile than expected and that I had to stay in bed for a week. I managed to overcome the hard time.
But I had to face another challenge. I could not leave the hospital soon and had to stay there for 3 months. The 3 months were so long to stay in the hospital that I forgot what was my daily life. I still do not know exactly why I had to stay in the hospital for so long. Probably, my bones were too fragile to leave the hospital sooner. So, I am very reluctant to have my hips replaced again. I do not want to stay in the hospital for so long.
In any case, the success of a hip repalcement heavily depends on the condition of the patients' bones . Some patients, who have good bones like Kazushige Nagashima, can leave the hospital very soon. But the paitients, whose bones around the hip were in poor condition like me, have to stay longer.
先日、タレントの長嶋一茂さんが右股関節の人工股関節置換術を受けたというニュースを見ました。手術は成功し、翌日から歩けるようになったようです。そしてすぐに退院です。それ以来、一茂さんは多くのテレビ番組に出演し、通常通り仕事をしています。手術はうまくいき、一茂さんも満足しているようです。
でも、彼の話はボクの体験とは違っていました。ぼくも30年前に同じ手術を受けました。彼と同じように、ボクも手術後すぐに退院できると思っていました。執刀医も、そんなことを言っていました。でも、すぐに退院できず、術後1週間、ベッドからでることは許されず、じっとベッドにいました。そのため、トイレもベッドでする始末です。この1週間はもどかしく、一日がとても長かったです。先生からは、股関節の周りの骨が予想以上にもろかったため、ベッドで1週間の安静が必要と言われました。それでも、この辛い時期をなんとか乗り越えました。
ところが、別の試練が待ち受けていました。すぐに退院することはできず、3カ月間入院することになりました。あまりに長い入院生活で、日常生活をすっかり忘れてしまいました。これほど長く入院しなければならなかった理由は、いまだによくわかっていません。おそらく、骨がもろかったせいでしょう。そのため、この手術をまた受けることにとても抵抗があります。もうこんなに長くは入院したくありません。
いずれにせよ、人工股関節置換術の成功の可否は、患者さんの骨の状態次第です。一茂さんのように骨の状態が良い患者はすぐに退院できます。でも、ボクのように股関節周りの骨の状態が悪いと、入院は長くなります。
