Winter Sweets （冬のスイーツ）
Cold winter has come all of a sudden. It has come so soon that I have had no time to catch up. Every day, it is so cold that the air conditioner is on full blast. But it is now the time to enjoy sweets. In particular, it is the best season to enjoy Japanese sweets.
The other cold day, I had a chance to enjoy baked sweet potatoes (Yakiimo in Japanese), a winter speciality. They were so warm and sweet that they helped me to unwind.
I was also temped to have a round cake with Japanese sweet fillings (Anko in Japanese) inside. I have loved it very much since I was a child. The cake, which is soft and easy to eat, has the good combination of the sweet cake and the sweet fillings. It always makes me happy. I am going to enjoy a lot of the potatoes and cakes as many as possible this winter.
But the cake has confused me for a long time. It has different names by the area. It was called Kaiten Yaki in Kyoto. I do not know how it is now called in Kyoto. But I used to call it so when I was in Kyoto.
But I could not find the name when I moved to the Tokyo area. One day, I found the same cake as Kaiten Yaki in Tokyo and checked the name. Then, it was called Imagawa Yaki. I was aware that Kaiten Yaki in Kyoto equals to Imagawa Yaki in the Tokyo area. Both are exactly the same, and they have the same texture and taste. I do not know why it is called Imagawa Yaki in the Tokyo area. From my view-point, Kaiten Yaki is the right name. It is round enough to roll over, and it seems to have nothing with Imagawa.
寒い冬が突然やってきました。あまりの早さに、追いついていけません。あまりに寒いので、毎日、エアコンを全開にしています。でも、これからはスイーツが美味しい季節です。特に和菓子が美味しいです。
先日、冬の名物の焼きいもを食べました。暖かくて甘い焼きいもにほっこりしました。
また、中にあんこが入った丸いケーキが食べたくなりました。子供の頃から大好きです。柔らかくて食べやすく、甘い皮と甘いあんこの組み合わせが抜群です。食べるといつも幸せな気分になります。この冬も焼きいもとケーキをたくさん食べて、楽しもうと思っています。
でも、このケーキには長い間、ボクを混乱させてきました。地域によって名前が違うのです。京都では「回転焼き」と呼んでいました。今、どう呼ばれているかは知りませんが、ボクが京都にいた頃はそう呼んでいました。
でも、東京に移ってからはこの名前を見かけることはありませんでした。ある日、東京で回転焼きと同じケーキを見つけたので、名前を確認しました。そしたら、今川焼きと呼ばれていました。その時、京都の回転焼きと東京の「今川焼き」が同じであることがわかりました。食感も味もまったく同じです。東京ではなぜ今川焼きと言うのかはわかりません。ボクからすると、回転焼きが正しいように思えます。形が転がりそうなほど丸いからです。また、「今川」とはなんの関係もなさそうです。
