REVIEW:Dutch National Ballet's "Don Quixote" 2024

One of the most memorable highlights in Amsterdam is watching great performances of the Dutch National Ballet. I had the opportunity to watch two performances on October 25th and 26th. These were the best Don Quixote performances I've ever seen, especially Giorgi Potkhishvili’s Basilio was outstanding!

Don Quixote played by Nicolas Rapaic, and Sancho Panza played by Frans Schraven, captured the audience's attention with their acting. This kind of performance is rare in Japan, which really piqued my interest. It felt like I was watching a theatrical performance from them.
The next day, Sancho Panza was also played by Frans Schraven, but Don Quixote was played by Tyucho Hupperets. This combination was also very interesting. The character of Don Quixote usually doesn’t have much presence in the story, but the two Don Quixotes I saw in Amsterdam had strong, distinct characteristics that added much spice to the performance. Nicolas seemed high-spirited, while Tyucho seemed full of integrity.

The main roles played by their principals, Anna Tsygankova and Giorgi Potkhishvili, were stunning. They created their own world with amazing technique and presence. Anna charmed the audience with her beautiful balance, while Giorgi brought the story to life as the real Basilio. Every woman can fall in love with this guy. His Georgian traditional dance, especially his jumps, also surprised us. Just wow.
Luckily, I had the opportunity to watch Japanese dancers in that show as well. Koyo Yamamoto, who played Espada on October 25th, was young but showed great promise for the future. Sho Yamada’s flexibility always amazed us. Luca Abdel-Nour is always beautiful.  It was great to see them.
