KDDI to use drones for "nighttime security" - Thermal cameras to identify suspicious people
For solar power plants

On the 19th, KDDI announced that it has begun a long-term operational demonstration project to remotely operate flying robots (drones) equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime security at solar power plants. Two sets of drones with automatic charging ports have been installed on the premises of the company's solar power plants. The drones automatically patrol pre-set monitoring routes in turn. Monitors will remotely check for intruders or suspicious movements at the solar power plant from within Tokyo based on images from the cameras mounted on the drones.
The drones will be Skydio Dock Four X2, a drone with an automatic charging port made by Skydio of the United States. In collaboration with Japan Airlines (JAL), which invested in KDDI Smart Drone (Minato-ku, Tokyo) in November 2023, KDDI will receive support in creating operation manuals and training pilots.
In addition to the existing security system, nighttime security will be strengthened by utilizing drones. The presence or absence of suspicious people can be confirmed even at night from the thermography captured by the thermal camera.
Solar power plants occupy large tracts of land, but due to a labor shortage it is difficult to secure security guards. Solar power plants are located in mountainous areas and other areas that are difficult to see, so there have been many incidents of copper wire cables and other items being stolen from within the plants at night.

ＫＤＤＩは１９日、サーマルカメラを搭載した飛行ロボット（ドローン）を遠隔運航し、太陽光発電所の夜間警備に用いる長期運用実証を始めたと発表した。自社の太陽光発電所の敷地内に自動充電ポート付きドローンを２セット設置。ドローンは事前設定した監視ルートを自動で交互に巡回する。監視者は都内から遠隔でドローンに搭載したカメラからの映像を基に、太陽光発電所に侵入者や不審な動きがないかを調べる。
米スカイディオの自動充電ポート付きドローン「スカイディオ・ドック・フォーＸ２」を用いる。２０２３年１１月にＫＤＤＩスマートドローン（東京都港区）に出資した日本航空（ＪＡＬ）と連携し、運航マニュアル作成や操縦者教育の支援を受ける。
既存のセキュリティー体制に加え、ドローンを活用することで夜間警備を強化する。サーマルカメラが映し出したサーモグラフィーから夜間でも不審者の有無を確認できる。
太陽光発電所は敷地面積が広大だが、人手不足で警備員の確保が難しくなっている。太陽光発電所は山間部などの人目につきにくい場所にあるため、発電所内の銅線ケーブルなどが夜間に盗まれる被害が多発していた。
