Suntory aims to achieve
"zero new use of petroleum in all PET bottles by 2030.”
And now,
they set a new goal
that is to convert half of all PET bottles in Japan to 100% sustainable-bottles by the end of 2022.
The 100% plant-based bottles were developed jointly with Anaerotech,
a US bioscience
venture company,
and are the first in the world to use wood chips.
The sustainable-bottles
used by Suntory
are not biodegradable,
but they can be recycled "bottle-to-bottle" by turning used bottles back into bottles.
Yasuhiko Akanuma,
manager of Suntory Holdings' Global Technology Department said.
“At this stage,
it's not our first choice
for raw materials,
but technically,
our sustainable-bottles can be made from recycled paper."
New technologies will likely to accelerate such efforts.

ーウッドチップからうまれたサントリーのサステナブルボトルー
サントリーは「2030年までに全ペットボトルで石油由来原料の新規使用ゼロ」を目指しています。新たな目標として2022年内に「国内のペットボトルの半数を100％サステナブルボトル化」を掲げました。植物由来原料100%のボトルは米バイオ科学ベンチャー企業のアネロテックと共同開発したものでウッドチップを用いたものでは世界初だそうです。サントリーが使用する植物由来原料100%のサステナブルボトルは、使用後土に還る生分解性プラスチックではありませんが、使用済みペットボトルを再びペットボトルにするリサイクル「ボトルtoボトル」が可能です。
「現段階では、原料の第一候補ではありませんが技術的には古紙からもペットボトルを造れますよ」とサントリーホールディングスのグローバル技術部課長、赤沼泰彦氏は述べています。新たな技術によりこうした取り組みが加速して行きそうですね。
