論文"Declaration of Victory: The Meaning and Achievements of the Stanford University Baseball Team's 1913 Tour"の草稿のご紹介(2)

昨年12月、ロバート・フィッツ、ビル・ナウリン、ジェームズ・フォーの各氏の編纂した書籍"Nichibei Yakyu: US Tours of Japan"の第1巻がアメリカ野球学会（SABR）から刊行され、私も論文"Declaration of Victory: The Meaning and Achievements of the Stanford University Baseball Team's 1913 Tour"を寄稿しました。

今回は、論文の日本語版草稿のご紹介の第2回目となります。

スタンフォード大学野球部の一行が東洋汽船の客船・日本丸[6]に乗り、サンフランシスコ港を出発したのは1913年5月10日のことで、5月27日に横浜港に到着した[7]。一行は総勢11名で、監督を務めたのは卒業生のR. W. ウィルコックスだった[8]。監督のウィルコックスを含め、日本への遠征に参加した11名の概要は以下の通りである（Table 1）。

今回の遠征は、スタンフォード大学にとって過去最長の10週間の予定であった。すなわち、日本で慶應義塾をはじめとして少なくとも12試合を行い、帰路は2週間にわたりハワイを訪問し、中国系の住民が結成した野球団ハワイ・アイランダーズと対戦する計画であった。遠征にかかる経費については慶應義塾が7000円（3500ドル）を保証していた。これに加えて、スタンフォード大学野球部側もサンタクルーズ・カラード・ジャイアンツとの試合で200ドルの収益があり、大学当局も250ドル、クアドラングル・クラブが50ドルの寄附を行い、合計500ドルを調達していた[9]。

1913年の7000円は2022年の約2800万円（約28万ドル）に相当する[10]。日本側の資金提供やスタンフォード大側の寄附があったとはいえ、多額の費用を調達できた点に、今回の遠征に対する日米双方の期待の高さが推察される。
