Smartphone zombies would kill us.

Texting and walking has already became a norm of our society. Hawaii officially banned it in 2017 and some countries have even introduced e-lane.
Since our view is obviously narrowed down, texting and walking might cause several accidents, i.e., bumping into someone’s shoulder. Actually, that’s not just uncomfortable, but also the risk of additional injury.

This story happened more than 10 years ago, when I had just finished resident and become an orthopedist.
One night when I worked for ER at night shift, woman in her early 70s came in with a shoulder pain. It was a new year’s eve and she went to a shrine for celebration. The shrine was packed and she carefully walked with her husband, but a young guy walking towered them bumped into her shoulder and walked away without saying anything. Her shoulder pain got worse in a couple of hours, which brought her to the ER.
Image investigation showed that her upper limb bone got fractured. Not to mention, both she and her husband were shocked. I haven’t seen her but heard she got a surgery later.

For elderly people like her, this slight external force could be harmful.
We should carefully consider these people and stop texting and walking.
