「Accidental Master: A boy's secret, a month in the world of martial arts」the first half

"My joints hurt all over. My head hurts too. I just feel so tired. This isn't a normal cold, it may be the flu. " As I lay quietly in bed, I thought...

Then, from somewhere, I heard a voice.

"... Kenta, can you hear me?"

"Huh...? Who is it?" I suddenly realized that a woman in white clothes was hovering in front of me.

She was a beautiful woman, the kind of goddess you would call. She was floating and glowing, well, it wasn't normal at all.

"Ah, is this a dream..."

"It's like a dream, but it's not a dream. Kenta, nice to meet you. I'm a god from a certain world, and I've come to ask you a favor."

The woman god smiled. A chill ran down my spine as I realized the gravity of the situation. In most manga and novels, this is the typical pattern where a god gives people an impossible task.

"Sorry, haa... Anyway, I'll decline."

"What? I haven't said anything yet."

"No, I'm... hu... I don't think I can be of any help, so please ask someone else."

Breathing heavily, I flatly declined.

"I feel a little bad, but Kenta has already been chosen. This is what they call God's decision. Even if you don't want to do it, you don't have a choice."

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"Don't worry, it's just a one-month mission. If you take the place of a certain man, you can return to this world."

"One... month?""

"That's right. An important person passed away earlier than expected... If things stay this way, the future will change. So, I want Kenta to live in his place until a certain ceremony in a month, and then die after properly choosing a successor. Be careful not to let others know that you're someone else."

I screamed, my voice filled with disbelief and impatience, "Wait! No way! That's so selfish!"

I frantically argued with her.

No matter how I thought about it, it was an impossible mission.

"Kenta, I told you, right? You have no choice but to do it."

The woman god smiled kindly, but I panicked.

"Sorry, but this is a necessary mission. You've been chosen, for better or worse. Do your best to complete it."

"Wait a second...! No, I refuse..."

I screamed desperately, but my consciousness faded away.

******

Then, when I woke up, I found myself in a place I'd never seen before, surrounded by a lot of people dressed in Chinese-style clothes. The atmosphere felt like something out of a Chinese kung fu movie.

"Master, how are you feeling? We were so worried that you suddenly collapsed."

An old man who seemed to be holding my hand and taking my pulse said this. He was wearing white clothes, like a lab coat that was different from the others, and was a calm intelligent old man. He had the air of an experienced physician.

Master...  the old master often seen in movies and manga. I felt like I was starring in a Chinese martial arts movie, suddenly thrust into the role of the revered master.

Confusion clouded my thoughts, but the conversation I had with the god came back to me.

"I want you to live until the ceremony in a month, and then choose a successor before you die. And of course, make sure no one finds out that Kenta is a double."

『That's right! Now I remember! I have to get through this month in this unfamiliar land without letting anyone know that I'm a substitute!』

I was seized by a wave of panic as I realized the enormity of the task ahead.
My heart started pounding.

"...I'm sorry, but could everyone else please go outside for a while? It's an emergency. I want to talk to him privately."

I tried to speak out as I looked at the man who seemed to be a doctor. My own voice surprised me. It had a deeper, more authoritative tone than I was used to, yes, really like an old man's.

With expressions of clear dissatisfaction, around a dozen people filed out of the room. Both women and men, they all had scary-looking faces. These weren't ordinary people; they were warriors for sure. They exude an aura of combat readiness, I guessed.

Once I was alone with the old doctor, I asked him. I attempted to speak like an old befitting grand master in a kung fu movie.

"...Actually, I have some memory problems. Are you a doctor?"

"Yes. I am Chen Jian, Master's personal doctor. How bad is your memory problem?"

"...I'll be honest. There are some parts of my memory that are unclear. I think I have an important ceremony coming up in a month, so...just to be sure, I want to get a firm grasp of everything. Can you tell me what you know about me?"

Concern crossed the doctor's face as he began to speak.

"You are the leader of our group Nenhassenken of 100,000 warriors. You are Master Li, the 26th supreme master and the best warrior."

Nenhassenken? The leader of a martial arts group of 100,000 people? Me? Impossible! I'm just a high school student who loves Jackie Chan and fighting manga. I'm good at watching, but I'm terrible at the real thing.

"You will be retiring in one month. Along with that, a ceremony will be held to decide the next Master. Out of the eight leaders of each school of Nenhassenken, only one of them will be chosen to succeed you. That's the plan we're currently working on. Deciding on the next Master is a major undertaking for our group. Disciples from all over the country are now gathering with the aim of coming here."

I found myself in a perilous predicament. How on earth am I supposed to deal with this when I have no knowledge whatsoever? I knew nothing about real martial arts or leadership.

"What kind of ceremony are we talking about?"

"Only you know."

"What do you mean?"

"You said a while ago that you had come up with a good way to choose a successor. I believe you had written something down in a notebook."

"Where? Where is that book?"

"...I believe it was written in a book that is kept by the Master's bedside. No one other than you see it."

I frantically rummaged through the futon and pillows, searching, and found a small booklet.

"...Is this it?"

I turned the pages, intent. Good, I can read the letter of this world.

It contained portraits, names, school names, careers, and other information on the eight candidates for succession. Good! My heart pounding with anticipation, I scanned the pages. The information I needed was here.

Next, the history and organizational chart of this group. There’s a lot written in great detail. It’s an incredible amount of information.

And what is the all-important method of selection? How do they narrow it down from eight people to just one? Will it be in a tournament format, or a round-robin format?

What caught my eye was... a set of difficult-sounding words that seemed to be from a historical story.

‘What are the necessary conditions to become the Great Master of martial arts? The important things are wisdom, faith, strictness, and courage. And everything is connected to love. I must measure the strength and love of each individual. What remains in the end, will be a largest vessel.
Heaven's net is wide and scattered, but nothing escapes it.
You should not choose based on strength alone. Of course you need the power to love, but you should also choose someone who has the wings of a mind that sees the bigger picture.

Which vessel, the water, the earth, and the Sky, is large enough to accept that treasure?’

『..I, I don't get it. It doesn't make any sense at all. And is this all? 』

I paused, my mind reeling. These words were like an enigmatic riddle, hinting at something profound yet elusive. What did they mean? How was I supposed to measure someone's strength and love? And what exactly was this 'large vessel' they spoke of? The gravity of my situation overwhelmed mine.

This is bad, I'm in trouble...

Could I really impersonate him for a month without being discovered?

What would happen if I were found out? What if they found out I wasn't their master but someone else? Even if I failed this mission, could I return to the world I knew?

I was sweating and my breathing was getting rough.

I collapsed into bed.

"M-master. Are you alright?"

" I'm not alright. My body is weary, and my memory is failing me. But I must survive until the ceremony in a month, and choose a successor. Shouldn't that be the case?"

"Yes, you're right."

I'm utterly lost. There are so many things I simply don't understand. At times like these, you know. The best thing to do is ask someone.

"Well... Chen Jian, what would you do if you were me? My memory is hazy from my illness, and I can barely remember the ceremony that is due to take place in a month. But as the leader of Nenhassenken, I cannot allow myself to fail. What do you think you would do?"

" Well... If I were in your position, Master, I would consult with Hongbao first."

" What do you mean? Who is Hongbao?"

" You don't remember Hongbao? He's your last direct disciple. He has been away on your behalf for a while, but he will be back soon. About twenty years ago, when he was still a child, he was in the mountains. You rescued him when he was wandering around. Since then, he has been by your side as your number one attendant. He values you more than his own life. Hongbao is someone you can trust. However, it may be dangerous to tell anyone other than Hongbao about your current situation."

A glimmer of hope sparked in my head. Hongbao might be the key to solving this mess.

"I see, I understand. So, Chen Jian, can I trust you?"

"Indeed, Master Li. My loyalty to you is unwavering. I have no regrets about the years I have spent serving you. I am at your disposal until the end."

My eyes got teary. A wave of warmth washed over me as I realized the depth of our friendship. Two old warriors, bound by mutual respect and shared experiences. Dude, this situation ... it's giving me chills, and so awesome!

Just as I was feeling this way, I heard loud footsteps approaching. "Master, Master! Master Li! Are you okay?" The heavy wooden door slammed open, and a big man covered in sweat rushed in. The big man knelt down on the ground next to Chen Jian and bowed.

"I apologize, Master! I was unable to be by your side when you were in such a difficult situation. This is a result of my incompetence. Please accept my deepest apologies."

"No, no, wait, wait. You're Hongbao?"

I spoke to the man who was pleading for forgiveness in a sad voice. When I saw Chen Jian, he nodded slightly, so there was no doubt about it.

The big man looked at me with wide, tearful eyes.

"Master, have you forgotten about me? That you don't need me anymore."

"No, no, wait. I'm not unnecessary. Calm down and listen. My memory is really hazy."

While Chen Jian closed the door to the room and explained the situation, I observed Hongbao.

He was a towering figure, muscular and reminiscent of a martial arts hero. But when I looked at his face, it looked young and innocent. He's older than me, but looks childish. He appears to be in his late twenties. Well, in the movies often, someone like Hongbao is the answer. And his name... Maybe the treasure written in the notebook refers to this guy. I flipped through the diary, searching for clues.

‘Which vessel, the water, the earth, and the Sky, is large enough to accept that treasure?’ In other words, wouldn't it be fine to choose a sect, the vessel, that would adopt this treasure?

I feel like I'm beginning to understand the meaning of the words spoken by the real Master. If I read it over and over again later, I'm sure I'll understand it a little better. Oh, I feel like I can do something about it. I'll read about the Eight Schools carefully, and confirm which school corresponds to Water, Earth, and Heaven. And then...

"Master, this Hongbao is a life that you saved. I dedicate everything to you. Please give me any instructions you want!"

"Yes, thank you. Anyway, I'm tired today so I want to rest. Can I sleep?"

I yawned, exhausted. I needed time to rest and plan my next move.
"Understood. I'll prepare for bed."

"Then I'll let everyone know. I'll come again tomorrow. Hongbao, please take care of our Master. "

"Yes, Mr. Chen, understood."

"Chen Jian, thank you. See you tomorrow."

Hongbao put the tea he had made on the desk next to the bed with a familiar look on his face.

Suddenly, I heard some big chattering voices from the other side of the door. Wow, this feels a bit awkward.

There was a tapping sound on the door, followed by a loud voice.

"Master, Master Li! Please show us your face!"

Well, I think it's best if I don't meet anyone anymore right now. If I get exposed, people will find out I'm a fake Master.

Seeming to sense my unease, Hongbao said to me, "Master, you must be tired. I'll tell everyone that you've gone to bed."

I nodded slightly, relieved.

"Please, Hongbao. I'm tired."

"Understood."

Anyway, I'm going to bed now. I don't know if it's because of my illness or because I'm old, but for some reason my body feels very tired and heavy. It's hard to breathe, and it's really painful.

I was planning to rest and devise a strategy when I heard angry voices. There's no privacy at all, that's how this house was built.

"Hongbao! Don't get in the way. We have a duty to make sure the Master is safe."

"You have no authority to speak to me in that way!"

"Anyway, I'm worried about the Master. Is he okay?"

"Everyone, Master Le is safe. Dr. Chen Jian explained that his condition has stabilized. He needs a rest, and he is already sleeping. Please let him rest peacefully like this until tomorrow."

"Who do you think you are, giving orders?"
"Why would you force yourself on the Master while he's resting and make his condition worse? Besides, you Eight Immortals are not allowed to have personal contact with him until the ceremony in a month."

"Don't talk like you're so high and mighty! Hongbao, shut your mouth up!"

Wow, that's scary. I was startled by their aggressive tone. Those rough voices...they were the ones who were there when I woke up. Hongbao, is he okay?

"Well, why don't we stop at this point? Master Li won't be able to sleep well if we're making this much noise in front of the room. We'll save Dr. Chen Jian's face."

"Shui, why are you in charge?"

"Then let me ask you, do you think a man who beats up Hongbao here and forces his way into the Master's room is worthy of being the head of Nenhassenken? Relax, buddy."

"That is...but..."

"Yeah, then I'll go home. See you tomorrow."

"Well then, me too. Good night, everyone."

"Ah, see you tomorrow. I'll be off too."

"What's going on? We're just making a lot of noise and looking stupid."

" Oh, this is ridiculous. Let's just go home."

The house fell silent.

After a while, Hongbao came back into the room.

"A-Are you okay?"

"I apologize for the disturbance, Master. I'm fine now. Please try to rest. "

"Sorry. I'll take you up on that offer and rest."

"Yes. Take your time."

I closed my eyes and thought.

This situation is just too difficult. Where do I start and how do I do it?

First of all, I have to find out what the ritual is.

Selecting one of the eight worthy successors sounds easy, but it's not. Maybe it's not enough to just choose someone who is strong.

But then I thought. Do all eight of them really want to be the Master, the head of the Nenhassenken group? Are there some among them who are reluctant to assume the role of Master?

It's fine if the person who wants to be the Master becomes the Master.

No, maybe that's not right either.
It's not just about strength or ambition. There's more to it than that.

How on earth do you decide who is suitable to be the leader of a martial arts group?

Oh, this is such a headache. I just want to go home... A sigh escaped my lips.

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the light.

"I'm sorry, Kenta. I'm causing you trouble because of my incompetence. It's my incompetence that prevented me from keeping alive until the ceremony."

The man was dressed in a traditional white gown, "the very picture of a kung fu master.

"So, you're the real master, then. Umm, what kind of ceremony do we have to do? How do we choose one successor out of the eight? I really want to go back to my world!!"

"Well, I want you to choose however you like. That's all I wanted to tell you."
I stared at him, dumbfounded. 'What?' I stammered.

"Wait! What do you mean?"

"The method I was thinking of is only in my head. Even if I told you that, it wouldn't work. There's a limit to how much you can convey in words. So, Kenta, you have to think about it as a master and handle it well."

I was utterly confused by his instructions.

"No way! How do I handle it...?"

"Just proceed in the way you think is best. No matter how much you think about it, in the end, you won't know which method was correct until some time has passed."

"N-No way. I'm just an amateur kid who doesn't know anything about martial arts!"

"Don't worry. You already know what's important. Act according to your own judgment and conscience."

With that, the old man disappeared.

What do you mean, I already know what's important?

Proceeding as my heart desires... What should I do?

I was left alone with my thoughts. When I came to, I was being shaken awake by a large hand.

"...Master, Master Li... Are you alright?"

A large man's worried face loomed over me.

It wasn't my familiar small room.

So, this was real...

If I don't decide on a successor, I can't really go back to my world... Ah, I feel like I might cry from the anxiety and fear...

"Master, are you okay? If there's anything I can do, please let me know."

The big man, Hongbao's eyes, expression, and the aura that emanates from his body tell me that he truly cares for me.

He reminded me of a loyal guardian dog, deeply concerned for my well-being.

--He cares for you more than his own life. Hongbao is someone you can trust, so conversely, is it dangerous to tell anyone other than Hongbao about the current situation...--

The doctor's words came to mind.

That's right, even though I don't really understand the situation, I want to at least live up to the expectations of Honbao and the old doctor who looks up to Master Li and takes care of him.

I'll just do my best to make the best possible choices and actions I can. I forced a smile, trying to reassure him.

I had made a decision. After eating the breakfast that had been prepared for me, I opened my notebook and began to study the files on the eight candidates.I

The first person's name was Lu Qian of the Sky. A young, elegant, slender man. I'll give him a nickname to remember him better. How about a Heavenly person? That sounds good.

Next is the sturdy old man from the countryside, Tetkun of the Earth. He's calm, intelligent, and like a typical Hermit with his own unique values.

Gonri of the Fire, the rough old man. He's plump and well-built, and seems to be a bullish man like a fire in everything he does. He's good at attacking while warding off the enemy's attacks, that sounds scary.

Aidai of the stream, the mysterious lady. She likes the flute. An unpredictable person who combines offense and defense, a tactician who appears out of nowhere. She's the type of person I've never met in my life before.

Zhang Gen of the Mountain is sounds like a martial arts master reminiscent of those in Jackie Chan's film. He can perform incredible feats of agility, like whirlwind kicks and flips

The chiropractor, Cao Xun of the Wind, is a calm, aristocratic middle-aged man. His refined appearance belies his expertise in brutal techniques like throat strikes and finger locks.

Han Zhen of the Thunder, a young man who views art as an explosion of the soul. He's a master of the monkey fist, known for his speed and agility.

Gutsy resourceful Mother, Kan Xian of the Water. She confuses her opponents with feminine movements. She's a close-quarters and defensive style. I think this is the one who calmed down the people who showed up in front of the room last night. She must be a leader type person.

Last night, Gonri of the Fire and Han Zhen of the Thunder, both known for their aggressive fighting styles, caused a disturbance.

Each is a leader of their own school. All eight of them undoubtedly possess unique abilities and pride. The real Master had said, "Just follow my heart." What if I were truly the Master? How would I choose a successor? What qualities are essential to lead so many people?

I pondered deeply and carefully. Remembering countless manga and kung fu movies, I stared at the words in my notebook.

『Wisdom, faith, strictness, and courage, —all forms of love. I need to measure each person's strength and love. The one who possesses these qualities in abundance will be the vessel I seek. The net of heaven is wide and scattered, but nothing escapes it. You should choose not only strength, but also the power to love and the wings of thought to see the bigger picture. Is it water, earth, or heaven that is the vessel with the capacity to receive the treasure? All are connected to the source of great love.』

Water, earth, or heaven... Gutsy Mother, Kan Xian of the Water, Lu Qian, a heavenly person, or Tetkun of the Earth seem to be the most likely candidates.

I had never exerted my mind so intensively.
I wanted to make the best possible decision.
Therefore, I decided to give each candidate three tasks.

"Hongbao, there is something I would like you to convey to the eight of them."

" As you wish, Master."

"Could you write a letter to them for me? I will meet you all in a month. Until then, I will not meet anyone. I want each of you to sharpen your minds and refine your skills. I look forward to seeing everyone in the best condition in a month. "

 One month.

My life was one of considerable comfort, thanks to the attentive care of Hongbao and Chen Jian.

Well, as an elderly man, I find it increasingly difficult. When I'm not feeling well, just sleeping, waking up, eating, and going to the bathroom is a struggle.

I remember an old man in my neighborhood often saying, 'Just living is hard when you get old.' …A sentiment with which I have become painfully familiar.

Hongbao and Chen Jian were really good to me, so I'm truly grateful.

When I think about it, they're both much older than me, but I feel really sorry for them taking care of me like they're superior. I couldn't say it out loud, but I muttered thank you many times in my heart.

For a month, I secluded myself, trying to reflect on the future of the sect.

I read over my notes many times, listened to all sorts of stories from the two of them, and asked myself questions over and over again.

And finally, the day arrived to decide the next leader.
Everyone gathered in a large martial arts training center, like a gymnasium.

I sat in the centre of a spacious hall. Hongbao and Chen Jian stood on either side of me.

In front of us sat the eight candidates, each accompanied by approximately one hundred of their students. There were nearly a thousand people in the hall, and they all stared at me with serious expressions on their faces.

To be honest, I was so scared that my body felt like it was shrinking.

As I endured the pressure, I spoke.

"Thank you all for coming. Today, I will assign three tasks to the eight candidates. The overall result will determine the next Supreme Master. The first task is treatment. "A true martial artist possesses the power of life and death. You must therefore demonstrate the ability to both heal and, if necessary, subdue an opponent. So, I want you to treat me. Well, in the unlikely event that I die during the process, all eight of you will be removed from the list of successors. Be careful not to kill me."

The students were surprised and excited, but the eight of them looked at me calmly.

After careful consideration, I decided on the first task: a massage.

I wanted to check whether they had the skill to heal, not just the skill to defeat an opponent. And I thought it would be a good way to see if they were considerate and caring. I believed this would reveal their true character, their ability to care for others.

I thought my proposal was sound, but Chen Jian opposed it. His expression turned serious as he warned me, "Someone might try to sabotage your health and then blame it on the person who treats you later."

I really didn't want to believe that anyone would harm the master. But yes, it's for the sake of gaining the top position in an organization of 100,000 people. You never know what's going to happen.

So, I decided to take out some insurance just in case. If I die, they will all be jointly liable and will have no right to inherit from me. This would act as a deterrent, preventing them from harming me. This may have sounded a bit cold, but that was a necessary calculation for the head of a large group.

I also decided to have Dr. Chen Jian check my health condition between treatments to increase safety.

"Who will do it first? "

The eight of them looked at each other but didn't say a word.

Then one of them stood up.

" I will begin, Master. I am Zhang Gen of the Mountain, and I shall do my best."

"Yes, please."

Honestly, I was really nervous, thinking I might be killed, but everyone was surprisingly skilled. However, there were differences in the way they touched my body, some were a little rough, others were polite and gentle.

I discreetly noted their strengths and weaknesses on a piece of paper.

"Now for the second assignment. Each of you, come in front of me in turn, and tell me the name of someone other than yourself who you think is worthy of being the top among the eight of you."

"...A name other than myself..."

As expected, the eight of them appeared bewildered by this.

They came in turn to give the name of the person they were recommending other than themselves. After that, I asked in a low voice.

"Do you want to succeed me?"

I quietly looked into their eyes, waiting for their answer. Most hesitated before answering in a whisper 'yes' or 'no'. No one would have heard them except me.

In the end, five of the eight said they wanted to be the Master.

Gonri of the Fire, Aidai of the Stream, Zhang Gen of the Mountain, Cao Xun of the Wind, and Han Zhen of the Thunder.

Lu Qian of the Sky, Tie Kun of the Earth, and Kan Xian of the Water declined. All three of the successors favored by the real leader – Water, Earth, and Sky –answered no.

I was surprised and concerned. This was not the outcome I had anticipated.

It seems unfair to force someone into a position they don't desire, yet to disregard the real leader's wishes feels equally wrong. Ummm...the weight of tradition, the expectations of the sect, and individual martial arts and leadership qualities and abilities ...

By the way, the names recommended by others were surprisingly varied and didn't seem like they would be decisive.

After much deliberation, I decided to use my last secret weapon.

"Now for the final task. We'll be doing Ryanken tournament."

Everyone's eyes widened in disbelief, their mouths forming silent 'O's'. The students behind, as well as the eight potential successors, gasped.

"No, that's too much."

"Master, are you serious?"

The room erupted in such chaos that I struggled to be heard.

"Quiet, everyone! Quiet! We can't hear the Master's voice!!"

Hongbao desperately called out to everyone, but the noise just wouldn't die down.

I closed my eyes and waited for the room to quiet down, then mustered all my strength to act like a master admonishing his students.

"You all gravely misunderstand. You likely dismiss Ryanken as mere child's play. But Ryanken requires you to deduce what your opponent will play and instantly decide what you will play. It's a much more advanced way of playing than you think. What's more, you can avoid hurting each other. Above all, in the end, you can't win unless you use your will to attract the invisible force of luck."

After a moment of silence, this time voices of approval were heard.

"I'm sorry. I didn't think of that."

"I had no idea there was such a profound theory. I'm painfully aware of my own immaturity."

"You can settle the matter between friends without getting hurt unnecessarily. I'm impressed that Ryanken is the optimal method."

Ryanken is ・・・well, what they call, rock-paper-scissors.

I really wanted to settle things peacefully.

But I thought that a hot-blooded person would not be convinced by a judgement without a fight.

That's when I thought of rock-paper-scissors.

I never thought they'd fool me so well. Everyone was so moved and sobbing. Things were going too well, luckily.

Okay, let's go with this flow and see it through to the end!

I signaled Hongbao with my eyes.

He nodded solemnly.

"Now, let's begin Ryanken round! Please sit next to each other in pairs. The acting masters of each family will act as judges. This time, the first person to win three times will be declared the winner. Please get ready."

In contrast to the excitement that was heating up the venue, I could feel the energy draining from me and the master's body.

My head was fuzzy, and my body was losing strength.

This is bad, I guess I'm getting close to death. Just hold on a little longer, until the end!

"Let's go! First up is rock, rock-paper-scissors!"

"Woooooooooooo!"

The martial arts hall shook like an earthquake as everyone cheered and stomped their feet in anticipation of the match.

to be continued…
