昔と今と。 ドキュメンタリー映画「ウィークエンド・チャンピオン 〜モンテカルロ1971〜」 感想文
「ワンス・アポン・ア・タイム・イン・ハリウッド」からそのまま飛び出してきたかのような（と言うかこっちが本家なのだが）才気溢れた天才監督：ロマン・ポランスキーが、3度のF1世界チャンピオン：ジャッキー・スチュアートと過ごした、1971年のモンテカルロ・グランプリの横顔を切り取ったドキュメンタリーだ。
天才あるあるな鋭さを感じさせない、むしろ穏やかな人柄のスチュアート。これから待ち受ける苦い運命をまるで知らない、ポランスキーの溌剌さ。この二人のやりとり、事故のない安全なレース模様、見ていて心地よい。
本作のミソは、終盤、スチュアートが優勝への歓喜の声を上げるところでビデオが終わり、
2013年の当事者（＝ポランスキーとスチュアート）が、1971年に撮り溜めたフィルムを鑑賞した後＿のシーンに入り、「今と昔の違い」を語ってみせる所だろう。
興味なさそうな顔してちゃんと直近のF1にも目を通しているポランスキーを聞き手に、スチュアートは「昔に比べて安全になったと」主張し続ける。それでも事故は起こる：挟まれる事故の映像は痛ましい。スチュアートが「自分の後継者」と見込んでいた青年の死。
やがてスチュアートは自分のことを語りだす、「失語症、読み書きができない」ことを。だから「賢いフリをしていた」ことを。1971年にはおくびも出さなかった、苦悩を。受難を。
やがてカメラは外へ飛び出し、（1971年同様に）ポランスキーを助手席に乗せてスチュアートはモナコのレース路を走る。やはりここでも昔と今が比較される。
その横顔には、「シャロンと暮らしていたころが 、自分の人生で一番幸せだった 」と言うポランスキーは言わずもがな、スチュアートにも、寂しさの影が、垣間見えるのは、気のせいだろうか？
Amazonのレビューを見ると、本作を引いて「F1は昔より今はつまらなくなった」というコメントも見かける、それはずばり、
Sir Jackie Stewart’s influence on international motor sport was generated not only by three World Championships but also when he was sitting still, trapped in a racing car leaking fuel. The terrifying accident during the 1966 Belgian Grand Prix would have a profound effect on the Scotsman’s thinking about safety. By today’s standards, driver protection and security were almost non-existent. The prevailing attitude was: ‘It’s a dangerous sport; if you don’t like it, then don’t do it.’ Stewart’s experience at Spa-Francorchamps highlighted the woeful lack of support when something went wrong. It took two other drivers to come to his rescue, borrow a spanner from a spectator’s car and remove the steering wheel trapping their rival in a BRM badly bent after spinning off the wet road and into a ditch. That was just the beginning of the shocking shortcomings as Stewart and his rescuers found a complete absence of medical backup to deal with petrol burns, a broken shoulder and a cracked rib. Stewart disregarded widespread criticism from the sport’s ‘old guard’ as he initiated a relentless campaign that would form the nucleus of the rigorous safety values in evidence today. He destroyed cynical suggestions that he was ‘scared’ by producing one of the greatest drives in F1 history, winning the German Grand Prix by more than four minutes at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, a fourteen-mile track that was fearsome in the dry, never mind the mist and rain making more than a hundred corners and curves a potentially lethal trap that afternoon in August 1968.
