ロンドンのハロウィンは、アメリカほどではないけど、仮装した子供が飾り付けた家を巡って「Trick or Treat」をするのが中心だ。
前に住んでいたエリアでは、たまたま近くに凝った演出をする豪邸通りがあって、そこで楽しい思いをした娘は「今年もハロウィンしたい」とだいぶ前から言っていた。
が、うちの近所はあまり盛り上がってないし、こちらの学校で仲良くなったお友達もハロウィンはしたことがないというので、１週間前くらいに家の近くの史跡のストロベリー・ヒル・ハウスのイベントを予約しようとしたら、既に売り切れていた。
それで、広告をよく見るキュー・ガーデンのサイトに行ったら（受け入れ人数が多いから直前でも大丈夫だろうと思っていたのだけど）そこもほぼ売り切れ寸前だったところ、滑り込みでチケットを確保した。
今年の娘の衣装は、本人の希望でシンプルなおばけ。当日ウキウキして家の中から皮を被り、出発を待つかわいいおばけ。
バスに乗るおばけ。他にも魔女が何人か乗っていた。
キュー・ガーデンのハロウィン・トレイルがどんなものかというと、一言で言うと屋外お化け屋敷であった。
広大な公園の一角で、骸骨やかぼちゃの飾りを見たり、死神や幽霊や墓守や魔女に扮したキャストに遭遇したりしながら１時間ほど歩くのだが、子供がターゲットなので怖さはほどよく抑えられている。終盤にはマシュマロを焼きながら（大人はムルド・ワインを片手に）みるマジックショーもあったりして、かなり凝っていたよ。イルミネーション好きな人にはおすすめ。
ただ、わたしは毎年のようにがっつり巻き込まれている割に、実はハロウィンは得意ではない。だって気味が悪いじゃないですか〜、骸骨とか蜘蛛とか。キュー・ガーデンも、明るいるうちに行って紅葉を見るほうが好き。
日没後だったしそんなに写真は撮らなかったけど、表題写真の木、大きいねえと思って近づいたら、死屍累々の骸から養分を吸い上げてた…
一方で、わたしのかわいいおばけは、行き交う人達に「ゴーストだ！」「わっ！」「フゥー！」などと大げさに怖がられるのをすごく楽しんでいた。
このおばけの仮装、ネットショップでも安かったし定番かと思ったら、クラシックすぎるからか、案外、他にいなかったんだよ。でも分かりやすいので、魔女とか何かのキャラクターとかより「オオゥ」と反応されやすい。
いつもは人見知りな娘（ルー語話者）が「あそこにいるひとに Haunt してくる」と、知らない家族を驚かしに行ったりしてて、ひとりでファミリー・チケットのもとを取ってくれた。
日本のハロウィンは羽目外しをしたいヤングアダルトの無礼講として発達しているけど、とはいえそれは渋谷とか六本木とか一部の都会の話よねと思っていたら、一晩明けて、ネットニュースで、わが故郷の岡山でヤンキーと警察入り乱れの大乱闘があったらしいというのが流れてきた。祖国を離れてはや３年、日式ハロウィンは私の知らない進化を遂げているのかしら？
子供が気味の悪い仮装をするのは、もともとケルトのお祭りで、この時節にご先祖様に紛れて戻って来る悪霊の目眩ましのためであると聞いた。その本家アイルランドの伝統的なイベントや、ディズニー映画の「Remember me」でみるような、メキシコの死者の日も、きっと雰囲気があるものなののだと思う。けど、去年の韓国での痛ましい事件といい、商業主義によって本来のお祝いや祈りから切り離されてしまった悪趣味な装いは、ただなにか悪いことを呼び寄せてしまうような気がするのよね。

Halloween in London isn't as big as in the US, but the critical event stays at the "trick-or-treat" by children. My daughter enjoyed a lot on a famous street for its over-the-top decorations, so she was looking forward to it again this year.
Unfortunately, our new neighbourhood isn't as into it; her best friend in the new school doesn't celebrate Halloween. So, I tried to book tickets for an event at Strawberry Hill House a week in advance, but they were already sold out. I then checked the Kew Gardens and managed to snag the remaining family ticket at the last minute.
Well, in short, the Halloween trail at Kew was an outdoor haunted house. Visitors walked around for an hour, seeing spooky decorations and encountering creepy characters like skeletons, ghosts, and witches under illuminations. It was well done, with a spooky magic show at the end.
However, to tell you the truth, despite being immersed in Halloween year after year, I'm not a big fan of it. I prefer visiting Kew in the daylight to see the autumn leaves. For example, I found the headline picture of a big tree beautiful, but at a close look, it was covered in dead bodies…eww.
My sweet little ghost, on the other hand, loved to haunt others. She really enjoyed sneaking up on strangers and got reactions such as "Oh, goat!" or "Scarely!"
Her ghost costume was quite classic, but it turned out to be unique. Everyone loved it! It's incredible how a shy child like her could be so outgoing.
While I thought Japan's Halloween events were confined to big cities like Shibuya and Roppongi, I read a web article about a massive brawl involving hoodlums and police in my hometown of Okayama prefecture. Oh no, has Japanese Halloween evolved in these 3 years in a way I never imagined?
Someone told me that "Halloween" originated as a Celtic festival to ward off evil spirits. Traditional Halloween celebrations in Ireland and Mexico's "Day of the Dead" must be atmospheric. However, recent incidents, like the tragic one in Korea last year(2023), make me wonder if the commercialisation cut off its original celebrations and prayers and made Halloween just a spooky sinister.
