Brits Weather Talk

「イギリス人は天気の話が好きだ」という。昔、英語の先生が言っていたけど、ロンドン暮らし3年目にして、それって本当だなと実感する。

6月半ばのロンドンは、本来なら夏至の手前で一番美しい季節でストリートフェスティバルも多いのに、先週は10度を切るような寒い日が続いてダウンコートが手放せなかった。今日は今日とて、１時間前に土砂降りが降ったのに、今は表題写真のような良い天気。石畳もからっと乾くほど。雨上がりの芝生や街路樹はまた緑が鮮やかで気持ち良い。

会う人、会う人、みんな天気の話をする。

「去年は30度越えが何日もあったのに・・・今年は寒すぎる」
「このあとフェスに行きたいけど・・・午後はどうなんだろう」
「8月にキャンプに行きたいけど・・・今年の夏がもう来ないのかな」

やはりブリテン島の天気が変わりやすく予測不可能だから。そして、晴れと雨との落差が激しいから。そもそもの地理的条件に加えて、近年の気候変動がジェットコースターのような目まぐるしさを生んでいる気もする。

あ・・・また雨が降ってきた・・・

日本は逆に猛暑だと聞きます。寒すぎるのも哀しいけど、暑すぎるのも辛い。みなさん、くれぐれも体を大切に。

"British people like to talk about the weather." My English teacher told me when I was a teenager.  After three years of living in London, I realised that's absolutely correct.

The middle of June is normally the most bright season before the Summer Solstice, and there are many street festivals in London. However, last week, it was cold and dumpy, with temperatures below 10 degrees.

Now, I am sitting in the Museum courtyard, and it's so lovely, as shown in the cover photo—but it was pouring in an hour ago. Can you believe it?

Everyone talks about the weather, indeed.

"Last year, we had some days over 30 degrees. What's going on this year?"

"Camping in August sounds great, but I doubt if the summer comes..."

"Camping in August sounds good, but worry about the summer coming."

After all, the weather on Britain Island is unpredictable. In addition, the recent global climate change has created a dizzying rollercoaster ride on the weather here. Then we can't help but talk about it because of the extreme drop-off between sunny and rainy,

On the other hand, I heard that Japan is facing a heat wave this year. It's miserable that it's too cold, but it's also hard to be too hot.

Oh, it starts a small shower again…
