【英訳】刻舟求剣
A man from Ch’u was going across the Yangtze River. His sword slipped from the boat into the water. He immediately nicked part of the hull, and said to himself, “This marks the spot where my sword fell.” Then his boat stopped. Following the notch he’d made, the man looked for his sword under the water. The boat, though, had already left the spot, while the sword hadn’t moved an inch. How senseless he was to search for his sword in such a manner!
楚人有渉江者。其剣自舟中墜於水。遽刻其舟曰、「是吾剣之所従墜也。」舟止。従其所刻者、入水求之。舟已行矣。而剣不行。求剣若此、不亦惑乎。
楚人に江を渉る者有り。其の剣舟中より水に墜つ。遽かに其の舟に刻みて曰はく、「是吾が剣の従りて墜ちし所なり」と。舟止まる。其の刻みし所の者より、水に入りて之を求む。舟は已に行けり。而るに剣は行かず。剣を求むること此くの如きは、亦た惑ひならずや。
