【英訳】侏儒の言葉12：鑑賞

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Appreciation

It takes cooperation between the artist himself and someone who appreciates his work to savour an artwork. To appreciate a work of art just means that you try to create your own work, so to speak, based on that one artwork you are enjoying. This is why artworks whose reputation is everlasting in history necessarily have characteristics that enable them to be appreciated from various points of view. However, that it is possible to savour them from every angle does not mean that, as Anatole France once put it, they are somehow created so vague that it is easy to interpret them in whichever ways anyone should like. Rather, it should be that they are multi-faceted just as the summits of Lushan are so that they can be appreciated from numerous viewpoints.

鑑賞
芸術の鑑賞は芸術家自身と鑑賞家との協力である。言わば鑑賞家は一つの作品を課題に彼自身の創作を試みるのに過ぎない。このゆえにいかなる時代にも名声を失わない作品は必ず種々の鑑賞を可能にする特色をそなえている。しかし種々の鑑賞を可能にするという意味はアナトオル・フランスの言うように、どこかあいまいにできているため、どういう解釈を加えるのもたやすいという意味ではあるまい。むしろ廬山の峰々のように、種々の立場から鑑賞されうる多面性をそなえているのであろう。
