Scandals
The public loves scandals. Those of Byakuren, Arishima, Mushanokoji - How much pleasure the public has found in these! Then, why do people love scandals, especially those of others whose names are known as celebrities? Gourmont says, trying to answer this -
“For they make their own scandals hidden within something natural.”
Gourmont is right, but that is not necessarily the whole story. In scandals of all those celebrities, the vulgar, who cannot even cause one themselves, indeed find a perfect way to excuse their cowardice. Simultaneously, they also find an ideal step-stone to establish their superiority that is imaginary. ‘I am aware I am not so beautiful as Lady Byakuren but I am more faithful.’ ‘I am not so intelligent as Mr Arishima but I know better than to do that.’ ‘Compared to Mr Mushanokoji, I am not so -’
- After speaking this way, how happily they have fallen asleep like a swine!
